I was doing some research into the 1921 census during the recent free period.

I found an entry that when transcribed bore no similarity whatsoever to the actual persons names.

Would you bother to let them know about this or just let it remain as it is?

AnnS..

I always send corrections if there are transcription errors. It is always important to double check with the original documents never just rely on the transcription. If document difficult to read try magnifying it.

My first real look at the 1921 census records but not many surprises. I did find that my great grandfather was in the Defence Force at Radford Aerodrome which was a surprise, as when he enlisted in 1914 he was discharged after just 31 days. I knew he wasn't with his family but had thought that he may have been in the workhouse.

To report an error to findmypast you do it from the transcript page. So you need to be able to see it and to that for the 1921 census you would need a subscription unless they have another free weekend and it's included, in which case you would only need to be registered.

Having gone through most of the 1921 censuses I saved, two things stand out.

First is probably not much of a surprise but the writing is pretty bad and second is how many people are listed as 'out of work'.

Surprised to find a couple of relatives with duplicate listings on the 1921 census, even more surprised that one listing was in Bham and the other in Wales. I suspect they were actually in Wales.

Also on the 1921 census, if someone is listed as a grocer for example and it's on their own account but business address is given, then I assume their shop/business is at their home address?

I've not done much on my tree for quite a long time now but thinking about starting again, need to subscribe but which one to go to?
I've tried to find my sister in law who seems to have disappeared from her former address, has she moved or gone into a nursing home like her mother did or died? I tried to look at the obituaries in the Brum Mail but like all the others there's the need to buy a sub to one of the genealogy sites now just to have a look, they offer a free trial but I find that can be a trap to get you locked in ‍♂️

I think it is which one you get used to first. I use and subscribe to Ancestry but you need to learn your way round the site.
I have an account on FMP but don't subscribe - I just use it to check the odd thing out.

On a different note if you post your sister-in-law's name perhaps we can help.

Most of the death records on ancestry sites only go up to about 2007. GRO death registrations are available up to 2022.

Also people can opt to not be shown on public electoral rolls or may have decided not to register to vote, so she could still be at the same address.

Eric - how do you know she is not still at that address?
I don't really Janice just haven't heard from her for a couple of years and the phone number doesn't work, should make the effort and get up there but it's a long way for me and I've not been well enough.
You have the correct lady though, she was born Quain then somehow became a Baggot before marrying my brother Gordon.

eric you could always drop her a line to that address to see if you get a reply..just a thought

I was about to suggest the same.
Put your name and a return address on the back of the envelope. Phone number inside. If she isn't there someone may let you know.

192 people search (I can search but not access) suggests she was still there in 2024.

I did that last Christmas (2023) with a card but no response.

in that case eric you could always send short note and enclose a stamped addressed envelope if she is not longer there whoever lives there now may drop you a note back with some info...thats all i can think of..
