A birth certificate of a person I'm researching lists the place of birth (in 1878) as Farm Road, Aston. The Farm Road I can find is located in Sparkhill. Would that have been covered by Aston in the late 1880s and the proper way to nominate the place of birth then (rather than Sparkhill)? If so, it is likely to be the place I'm looking to confirm, as I can't find a Farm Road or anything near to that name in Aston. Any help would be great. Thx!

yes i was going to mention farm st jan..ran all the way to summer lane ..if we have a name we could see if they are on the 1881 census as well

Yes, agree: from 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Sparkbrook as:
SPARKBROOK, a chapelry in Aston parish, Warwick; on the river Cole
An observation: the father Harry Smith Cooksey, was an architect by profession. Near to Farm Road Sparkbrook is a road named Cooksey Road. Coincidence? Any connection ?

definately says farm road on the birth cert...on the 1881 they have moved to 51 rugby road milverton..harrys occupation is manager for mansell beer
by 1891 they have moved to leamington..harrys occupation is manager for removing and storing business and public room/s

A birth was registered at the appropriate REGISTRATION office. Aston Registration Office covered a very large area covering much of what is now Birmingham including Sparkbrook, Aston, Bordesley etc. but not Sparkhill.
There were originally four Registration Districts [=R.D.] covering what is now Birmingham. These were Birmingham [the borough] which was quite tiny at the time!, Aston which covered a much larger area, Kings Norton [which included Smethwick, Harborne, Kings Norton, Northfield & Edgbaston] and last but not least Solihull R.D. which included the old parish of Yardley including Sparkhill.
So a person BORN in Sparkbrook at the time would have the BIRTH registered in Aston R.D. Causes lots of confusion.
But all changed by 1924.

Great! Thank you all for this helpful info. It looks like it could be a Victorian property but an AI search says Farm Road houses were built in 1930s - any ideas or older maps available please? Also, an AI search say Aston, Warwickshire, was known officially as Aston-juxta-Birmingham until early 20th century - is that right? Thx!

Historically Sparkhill was in the ancient parish of Yardley rather than Aston. Not sure about Sparkbrook.
dont worry we have the correct house..as you say no 12 is victorian and would have been there in 1878 not very old at that time i would say...yes known as aston juxta..click on the map below and keep your eye on no 12 then move the blue dot to the left the map will fade out and show you what is there now and what has gone...you can move the map around...lyn

Thx! - looks like it could be - though he identifies himself as an architect on his daughter's birth cert there wasn't any restriction on self-identifying as such in 1878, and I suppose anyone active in building/property management could see themselves as an architect, especially if they had technical drawing skills or had studied that.
