farm road sparkbrook

Thomas Smith, florist (or his predecessor) must have grown some of his own flowers/plants judging by the space given up to the greenhouses/lean-to marked on the map. Doubtless he raised his own chrysanthemum plants (advertised on the board above the door) and perhaps he had use of the open ground alongside to plant these out for their eventual sale as flowers (at least in the 1880s, before the land was built upon). Looks like a small nursery (the plant-type) to the right side of the end cottage.

The cottage to the far left has an umbrella sign above the door. Maybe an umbrella-maker or repairer ? This cottage is also displaying a sign for dyeing.
