Family History research

Bevley

Brummie babby
My Grandfather, Walter Lindsay Guy (born 1891), completed his apprenticeship at Belliss & Morcom prior to emigrating to Australia in 1912. Would appreciate any advice on how to search for this information as I am new to family history research. Thank you. Bevley

hi bevley and welcome...are you looking for info on bellis and morcom or your family ancestry in general..if its your family ancestry then you could join either ancestry or find my past and we do have quite a bit of info on the forum about bellis and morcom..

Hi Lyn,
Thanks for replying so quickly. At this stage I am looking for info on Bellis and Morcom only during the period my grandfather was there - probably 1906 to 1912. I don't know how long his apprenticeship would be.

hi bevley if you put in bellis and morcom in our search box i think there maybe a couple of threads that could be of interest

Hi Lyn, I did as you suggested but unfortunately no threads were found. I have tried to find contact details for Bellis & Morcom but the only email address I found wanted to know what product I wanted to buy which isn't the case. I shall just have to keep plodding along. Thanks for your help. Bevley

hi bevley

Hello Beverly, have you tried Googling or Wikipedia? I just did and there was quite a bit of information. Not sure it’s what you need, worth a look.

Hi Richard, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have done both and printed out the info from Wikipedia and it seems the company has been taken over or merged with other companies over the years. I am trying to obtain specific info on my grandfather's apprenticeship and was hoping to contact whoever has the staff records from the period 1906 to 1912 approximately. I shall search the three sites that True Brummie has given me. It may turn out to be 'pie in the sky' but I am not giving up just yet. Thanks once again. Bevley

Thanks Derek. The articles you sent are very interesting - my brain is going around in circles. I would like to contact the organisation who holds the employee records from that era to find out whether they have any information on my Grandfather. There is information available that the records have been found but not who actually has them. My Grandfather emigrated to Australia 1912 at the age of 20 years after he finished his Patternmaker/Draftsman apprenticeship and if he served 7 years then he must have started at a very early age. Thanks again Derek. Bevley

Don't forget that even as late as the 1940s children left school and started apprenticeships at the age of 14. So starting at 12 or 13 (or earlier) in 1900s would have been usual.

@Bevley, if you are local to Birmingham or could visit for some time then you could visit the Birmingham Archives, for this you need an Archives Card. https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50134/archives_and_collections/1552/archives_and_collections/4
I appreciate that you may may live in Australia though.
Derek
Thanks Stokkie. I shall search the Bermingham Archives. Yes, I live in Queensland. Bevley
