Faded Lettering

Gone but not forgotten R.I.P.
I see that the lettering on my parents 25 year old headstone has almost 50% faded or disappeared. I imagine to get it restored professionally would be expensive, so is there a DIY way of trying to get the lettering looking half decent.
 
Depends what you mean by expensive. Is it the carving which is damaged or is it the colouring? We had the memorial stone for my in-laws at Perry Barr Crematorium restored. The Crematorium got in touch with the stone mason they use and got us a free quote. That said - if you google gravestone restoration there are several youtube videos with ideas for DIY.
 
Thanks for your reply Janice. I looked at youtube by inputing gravestone restoration and the very first video shows the type of problem I have. I haven't yet viewed all the video but I will when I get the chance. As for expense, I am not looking to spend a lot to be honest, as mom would have said "don't get wasting money on me" :-), but as it was her birthday yesterday I took her some flowers.
