Does anyone know if the full match of this 1956 Cup Final is available on film? I've seen a couple of minutes of highlights including the goals, but as a Bluenose this isn't enough!!!

Yes Alf, a full 6 minutes, which is the most I've seen. Brilliant! Noticed how 'open' the football was. No close marking like nowadays.

Yes and Villa won it the next year 1957 Beating the great Busby Babes

No forgetting WBA who won it a great time for midland Teams

Good quality film. I've seen this before without commentary, so to have the sound is a bonus! Thanks Ragga.

I have the full match on DVD - bought it on eBay a few years ago. But the quality is nowhere near as good as the above footage, it's like watching the game through net curtain! :-)

I've never forgiven Len Boyd; my son cried all the way home from the game.

Yes, the Pathe footage is very good, which is obviously edited from the full match, which means there must be an original film, probably 8mm, out there somewhere. No good asking for a copy otherwise it's going to be like looking through two net curtains!!! Thanks for the info anyway. The Blues defence looked vunerable all through the short film! Didn't see Brum until 1961 when my uncle started taking me to the home matches (I was only 10 years old) A few of the players form the 1956 cup side were still playing then. I've been a sufferer ever since!

Frank, I was there, it was a very hot day, Blues wore a kit made of a thick material (Voile?) with long sleeves which they had worn against WBA on a cold day with snow on the pitch, Man City wore a light material kit with short sleeves plus the fact that Len Boyd was not fit made them realy tired was one cause of their defeat. Len.

I remember it well as the song goes, I was serving aboard HMS Glasgow at the time, we were berthed alongside in Cherbourg and listening to it on the radio, I can tell you there were a few Brummie Matelot's in tears too.

Well, could it be Europe again after 50 years??? A long way to go this season but the next few games will give a good guide!
I don't know about 'heavy' shirts in 1956, what about the boots! My first football boots around that time was like wearing steal toe cap boots and it felt like I was kicking a medicine ball.... know what I mean?
Good times ahead (at last) maybe!

It looks like the midland clubs are on the up.
As a point of interest Darby, you would have seen the damage to the gun emplacements at Cherbourg,H.M.S.Glasgow was responsible for some of it in 1944.

somewhere on the forum i have posted a pic of the blues..west brom and villa teams taken all together...if i remember it correctly all three of these sides were in the quarter finals of the 56 fa cup....the other being man city...well i think ive got that right as it was quite some time ago when i posted...

Astoness, I remember your post of the teams and we tried to figure out were it was taken, don`t think i have it now. Len.

That was the match in which Man City's goalie Bert Trautmann played most of the game with a broken neck, wasn't it?

Big Gee

We had a TV as Dad was a blues supporter though never bragged about it(whats to brag about??) Had all the neighbours (Menfolk ) in Mom made ham rolls. I was 8years old

Hi All,

I have supported Blues for over 70 years. I could not gey a ticket for the Blues - Man City final but I got one without any biother for the Villa - Man Utd game. I supported Villa for a day. It was a good day out and you could have plenty of banter with opposing supporters in those days.

I too have a copy of the 1956 cup final on dvd (complete match with commentary) Although the quality isn't perfect, i was over the moon to get hold of a copy. I also have the programme, match ticket, and Argos newspaper match report. I didn't go to the match as i was only 4 months old!!

It's been a struggle being a Blues fan ever since but there are signs that better days could be ahead of us.

KEEP RIGHT ON.

Steve
