F H Manley & Sons, Photographer

Shortie

master brummie
Can anyone tell me what years photographers F H Manley & Sons were trading at Coventry Road, Hay Mills please. From the look of the photo (not in my possession) the clothing looks about WW1 style.

Looked at Kellys for 1900, 1903,1904,1905,1908,1810,1912,1913,1915 & 1921. could find no F.H. Manley.
However:
1903-12 Manley Clara (Mrs.), confectioner, 137 Coventry road, Hay Mill, Yardley
Gone by 1913.
In 1912 the only person listed on the electoral roll was Clara Manley.
I would suggest that possibly she allowed a relative to use the building address for photography

Thank you Mike for looking. I shall pass this on to the owner of the photograph - she has relatives of that name living in Hay Mills and wondered if it was a relative. Still no nearer, but perhaps a little light has been shone.

Hi Shortie,

The 1911 census for 137 Coventry Road lists George and Clara Manley with daughter Beatrice, son Ernest, daughters May and Maria and 2 visitors by the name of Bayley.
Son ERNEST's occupation is recorded as "Photograping" (thats how its spelt)
I have not found a reason for the F.H bit unless it was E.H ???

Hi Lindyloo - I think it must be EH - I gather it's on the bottom of the photo, some may have rubbed off, especially if it's in gold. Seems like that Ernest is the one, all makes sense now.

Thanks very much.

Hi Paul,
The location for 137, Coventry Road, Hay Mills had me confused because to my way of thinking the lower numbers on the Coventry Road would have started at the town end of the road and I found in the Kelly's for 1915 that 137 sat between what was Bordesley Park Road and Mount Pleasant...so I was going to try and find photos of that area....BUT then I thought surely that wouldnt have been classed as Hay Mills..so I decided to look at the Kelly's again and sure enough I found another 137 in the next section which is labelled "Coventry Road, Hay Mill, Yardley, a continuation of Coventry Road, Bordesley".
The last building in the previous section was numbered 882 and was just before Hay Mill Brook, then the numbers started again !!..Number 2 (on the South side) being The Hay Mill Tavern. Number 1 (on the North side) was The Plough and Harrow and 137 was next to Deakins Road, so I think the attached picture is of where it was.
Mikejee if you read this and have time please would you take a look and see if I have this right :)

Coventry road was like Pershore road in that, at one time, it had two sections , which were numbered separately. Pershore was, in fact, even more complicated. I think the reason lies in boundaries, in that , originally the Hay mills section must have been outside the birmingham boundary. Yes I can confirm that the corner shop (DARC) seems to be no 1138, which was no 137 under the old numbering system.

Hi Mikejee,
Thanks for taking the time to check for me and for the explanation, both of which are most appreciated. I am glad I realised and rechecked !! it's a very useful fact to keep in mind for future searches....it has also prompted me to go back and check one of my Coventry Road ancestors..just to make sure I have him in the right place !!!

(Edit..ancestors location rechecked and correct :) "back of 408 by The Grange cinema)

If I can get the photo, I will. It's owned by a lady whom I do not see very often, but writes to me. She has no computer, although I have spoken of this Forum often to her (I think it would be good for her for various reasons). I don't know if she will be willing to let me borrow it, but I shall ask the question.
