Evans Jane (Jennie) 1856? - 1942

I am looking for information about Jane Evans who died in Wangaratta/Victoria/Australia in 1942. Her marriage notice in the Melbourne Argus (22/05/1886) states "Allan-Evans - On the 13th inst., at the residence of the bride's uncle, J. Stenhouse, Ellerslie, Wangaratta, by the Rev. A. McDonald, William Kerr, eldest son of William Allan, Oxley, to Jane (Jennie), eldest daughter of Humphrey Evans, of (Vaux-hall) Saltley, Birmingham, England. Home papers please copy."

I would appreciate any information about Jane and her Birmingham family that anyone may be able to give me.

Many thanks, David

Re: Jane (Jennie) Evans 1856? - 1942

If you look at the census for the area, surprisingly in 1881.1871 & 1861, there is only one Humphrey Evans listed that would fit. Jane is absent in 1881 & 1871, but is there in Cato St (no number given) in 1851, aged 4, born Copenhall cheshire.
With her are:
Humphrey Evans, head.(36) Coach body maker, born Marentavrog (?) Wales
Mary Evans, wife (34) born Denby , Wales
Robert Evans, son (6) born Copenhall Cheshire
Owen Evans, son,(1) born Copenhall Cheshire
In 1871 humphrey lives at 32 Saltley Road
In 1881 he lives at 29 Somerset St
So presumably (from place of birth of children) they will be found in Copenhall in 1851
Robert & Owen are with him in 1871, so would be interesting to know why jane went to the other side of the world
Ancestry Refs for these are;
1861 Warwickshire.Aston.Duddeston.dist.32.p.33
1871 Warwickshire.Aston.Duddeston.dist.33.p.25
1881 Warwickshire.Aston.Duddeston.dist.37.p.4

That's brilliant, Mike. I am in Newcastle, Australia, and I've just started researching this family and I'm unsure of the 'lay of the land', so to speak. Thank you so much for your help in helping solve the puzzle. I think Jane Evans followed other older family members out to Australia. The marriage notice mentions J. (John) Stenhouse but I think it was to Mrs. Stenhouse that Jane was related. I am very grateful.

Best,

David

Thanks Alberta, that's fantastic. Your information corresponds to this obituary I've found for a Evan Evans (1829 - 1919), supposedly published in the Wangaratta Chronicle 08/01/1919: "Death of Evan Evans Snr on Sunday at his home 'Tynant' Myrrhee after 5 days illness... He was born Mantworag (sic) Wales in 1829, and arrived in Australia 1859. A brother had come out some years years before. He married before leaving Wales. His wife came out a couple of years after his arrival... The sole surviving member of the original Evans family that came to Australia is Mrs Jno Stenhouse (Wangaratta)."

All this information is helping me build a picture of the life Jane Evans left behind, and I'm extremely grateful.

Best,

David
