Erdington

The Acorn was on the corner of Church Road. We drank there in the mid fifties to early sixties, it was one of those pubs that looked as if it was built about 1930s. Iy had that pre war modernism look about it.
 
Lovely set of photo's there Terry.
The shot of BURTONS tailors took me right back to the early 1970's, when my wife and I used to look after the snack bar in the snooker club on the first floor.
Happy days.
 
Do recall the youth club on Monday evenings held in the rooms over the Co-oP in the High St during the mid 60's ? Run by the local Labour Party I assume - not that us teenagers had any interest in politics, only the opposite sex and the record player.
 
Terry, wonderful, great chunks of my childhood were there, especially the front counter of the library and the trams on the Sutton New road.

Sorry for the confusion Terrypin,I meant to put Gardners milk BAR just up from Burtons menswear,we saw it on your great video.
My mother used to take me shopping on a saturday, always stopped there and had a milkshake and toast in the 50's.
I remember the High St very well.

into being after the expresso coffee bars in town got going. They have been mentioned on this site before. It was very close to the Church House and the Dolcis shoe shop. It was always a squeeze to get in there. Basically, it was a residential house that had been converted. The coffee was 9d per cup and was made in the traditional espresso machines.
We all thought it was a very special scene. The music came from
a juke box which played all the hits of the time. There was an upstairs
area as well. One night in l958 I met my first serious boyfriend in there and we went out for four years. Lovely memories Alberta.

Hi Jennyann,

I know this quote is from a while ago but I'm very interested to hear any more you know about the Anstey Club. I live quite close to where the Pavilion used to be and we're getting together all the local history of this area which we tend to call 'Little Boldmere'. I went to the cinema and the bowling alley before they were demolished to make way for housing.

By the way, my husband's Nan worked at Dicks in Erdington, probably in the 1950's.

Also I was at Erdington Grammar 1958-1963. Where you there then? (or am I confusing my quotes and should be asking Alberta?) Do you remember Miss Mole, Miss Gawley, Miss Bushrod? I still see some of my friends and we were saying how old these teachers seemed and yet they must've retired at 60 so were far younger than we are now. How times change!
 
Slightly off topic!, can anyone remember a model shop down new street road Erdington bottom of the ramp to Wilton market in the 70's? Please

Hi I used buy models from a shop in new St Erdington in the 70's was at the bottom of the ramp to Wilton market anyone remember this shop PLEASE? Also there was a shop on tyburn road that used to sell models too?

I've been Googling for ages to try to find out what happened to Jim Davis (and his family) and Jim Davis Models that was at Stockland Green, but can't find anything.

The reason being that when I left school in July '75 I got a job at The Gift Shop, Stockland Green, and then the next door Toyland which were both owned by him and his family.
His mom, then in her 70's was the manageress over me.
He also had his Model Shop (for model airplanes, and maybe railway engines) over the road.

Sorry I have taken a while to reply,I remember Stockland Green very well,I worked at Sheena's Hair Salon on Slade Road for 4 years in the '60's.The model shop was up from the Plaza cinema,now a bingo hall.I know a lot about modelling as my husband's a modeller.
I don't recall a model shop by Wilton Market. I revisited Erdington 10 years ago,went in the market then.First time we'd seen a green sheepskin.All the ones we grow are white(with the occasional black one).Erdington has changed a lot from the 60's & 70's,looked on Google Earth and saw the market has been knocked down and rebuilt,looks better.
Nice to look back on this forum too.

At the top of Slade road near Stockland Green were tall railings which were part of Highcroft hospital. Quite often there would be patients sticking their arms thru the railings & almost begging you to run to the shop opposite & get them some baccy or ciggies. I wonder if anyone ever took the money off them & did a runner. Hope not. I loved Slade road. Went to Slade school, Drank in the Brookvale pub, Pumped money into the cafe jukebox next to the pub & courted a girl there, Bliss.
 
The Manor House of Pype also known as Pype Orchard and Wood End House, was built about 1600 and later became the home of the Holden family. The house was demolished about 1932. With thanks to Warwickshire Photographic Survey project.

Re: Erdington Photos

Three early photos of Terrys Lane which I am reliably informed was later renamed Eachelhurst Rd. The photos were all taken from roughly the same spot show a large house in the background. I'm assuming that this large house was The Woodlands which was near to the junction of Woodlands Farm Rd, unless of course anyone knows better.

I remember the old shops on the left, they were much better then the building there now and I usually like modern buildings.

I have the photo's of Terry's Lane Phil, in a book called Erdington Past and Present published by Birmingham Libraries. They were taken by Sir Benjamin Stone in about 1890.

It was opposite where it is now in Barnabas road, where the Charlie Hall pub is now. Don't know when it closed.
