Engine fitter

master brummie
If some one is listed as an Engine fitter in 1851, has any one any ideas what that would actually be???Jane

janeld you ask about an engine fitter in 2008 sorry about late reply but new to site. he would have been a very skilled man he would work on steam engines making parts fit togethe ie= rough castings for cylinders and piston rings have to be steam tight or the engine would not run also bearings for shafts had to be scraped in using engineers blue and scrapers all done by hand. modern machinery uses parts you can buy from the manufacturer nd they bolt straight on in his day they were mostly custom made.A modern misconception is that a mechanic makes parts, and a fitter bolts them on not so the term fitter cates backto pre steam days the term mechanic as know it dates backto automobile days. sorry about missing grammer marks ,I hate commputers personly Idont think they will ever catch on just a fad

Thankyou chainmaker for the insite. Its interesting what you say about working on steam engines ,as not far from where he lived there is a pumping house on the canal system at Galton bridge in Smethwick, where 2 watt engines were housed to pump water around the canal system. Incidentley the pump house and engines have been restored to there former glory and are open on days throughout the year..
