janeld you ask about an engine fitter in 2008 sorry about late reply but new to site. he would have been a very skilled man he would work on steam engines making parts fit togethe ie= rough castings for cylinders and piston rings have to be steam tight or the engine would not run also bearings for shafts had to be scraped in using engineers blue and scrapers all done by hand. modern machinery uses parts you can buy from the manufacturer nd they bolt straight on in his day they were mostly custom made.A modern misconception is that a mechanic makes parts, and a fitter bolts them on not so the term fitter cates backto pre steam days the term mechanic as know it dates backto automobile days. sorry about missing grammer marks ,I hate commputers personly Idont think they will ever catch on just a fad
