John Elliott gave occupation on the birth certificate as Perambulator Hood Maker.

Re: John Elliott

Hello,

I've had a bit of a look but couldn't find anything certain, so this is just speculation.

I found Phyllis Ann Elliott's death on freebmd in 1889 which gave her age as 29. However I couldn't find any marriage for John Elliott and Phyllis in 1877.

The only Phyllis Ann Ridley who was born about the right time I could find was born in Wortley, Yorkshire. She is listed on freebmd as Phillis Ann Ridley in the Hunslet district (Jun 1860).

In 1861 she's living in Wortley with her parents, Robert W (b1826 in Shields, Durham) and Annie (b1882 in Berwick upon Tweed, Durham), 3 brothers and 2 sisters (some born in Durham and some in Yorkshire).

In 1871 Phyllis (listed as Philisan) is living in Birmingham with her widowed Mother, a brother and a sister (all there births are listed as Leeds). One of her older brothers Robert Wood Ridley has married Amelia Louisa Beer in Dec 1869.

It looks like Phillis Ann marries a Frederick Carpenter in Sep 1877 (freebmd) and has a daughter Mary Ann (baptism with parents names listed on family search). Unfortunately it looks like Frederick dies Sep 1878 (freebmd) possibly before his daughter is born and Mary Ann dies Jun 1879 (freebmd).

I can find no record for Phyllis in the 1881 census under Elliott, Carpenter or even Ridley. Neither can I find a marriage for her to a John Elliott before her death or a death for a Phyllis Carpenter.

I think her brother James is listed as living in Shoreditch with a wife (Hephzibah) and a daughter Phillis Ann.

And there's not enough info in John Elliot to look for anything.

Re: John Elliott

Thank you for that the only info I have is on the birth certificate for Phyllis Ellen. I thought I had found the marriage on Bmd will look again. My hope that some other family is able to shed some light on it.

Re: John Elliott

Having found Phyllis Ellen living in Cottage homes in 1891 could it be that she was an orphan, there is a death of a John George Elliott age 33 in 1886 Birmingham.

Re: John Elliott

See William Earp 1868 yes pretty sure Phyllis Ellen is the one the home. If John George is the right one then that answers why we can't find him.

Checking the death certificate should give the name of the informant and if it happens to be Phyllis, then you've got the right one. Alternatively if it's not and the informant is listed as wife, then you can rule him out. Also checking Phyllis's death certificate for the informant might be helpful,

I am assuming that the relationship is listed like modern ones. I haven't seen a death certificate that old.

I think I mistakenly asumed that the mariage entry was for Elliott. I have sent for her death certificate to see if we can tie it in anyway.

Hi, I have looked at the information for the home and see that they only took girls from 3-13 so am wondering what happened to her when she left. would she have gone to a workhouse or perhaps a servant somewhere?

The Marston Green homes where Phyllis was resident in 1891 was a childrens home and workhouse but she would most likely have been sent to work as a servant.

Is this info of any use?

Hi, I have all that it is the time from when she would have had to leave the home that eludes me.
Because she would probably have left at 13 it would have been 1896 so in between census and wouldn't have been old enough to be on an electoral role I will probaly never find where she was. It is so frustrating when info given by my mother has proved to be shall we say slightly incorrect. I can't even for sure identify Phyllis's parents so am at a dead end with this side of my family. I can't even identify my mothers father no name on birth certificate no one living with her mother at the time.I envy the younger generation as they will have so much info available to them with everything being documented.
