Hi,
Does anyone have any information about the theatre on this 1916 Godfrey map? Its at the junction of Bristol Street and Wrentham Street.
A lot of my family lived on Wrentham Street in the early 1900's and I wondered if this was a place they would have gone to for entertainment - assuming they had the money!
Thanks.

We had the Cinephone Cinema in that area round about the 60s it may have been a Theatre before that. Dek

I should also be interested to hear what happened to it. There's a glimpse of what had become of it, and the adjoining area, by 1943/44 on my website page here.

I think it's one of the buildings in the distance on the far right of this image. See link for further information. Orientation of line of view is based on 1910 map - believed at the time to be a correct interpretation but may be open to question. Wrentham Street runs across the picture, beyond the emergency water storage and waste land.

PS It still appears to be standing in 1949. I think it is the large building on the right hand side of the street, beyond the church spire.

The cinema was originally called the Electric Picture House when opened but soon changed its name to the Bristol St Picture House. It was demolished in 1923 and opened as The Broadway, going over to talkies in 1931. On 26 th April 1956 , after major reconstruction, it reopned as the Cinephone, specialising in foriegn and sex films. Closed 1977, but reopened later as the Gala, then becoming a private club cinema, the Climax. Closed finally 1984

The Broadway as it was before the refit in 1956 and as it appeared as the Cinephone after that date.Broadway.jpg cinephone.jpg
