I’m struggling to convince people that there was a bowling green at the back of the pub. If you have any maps showing it that would be great. Also a general appeal for any more old photos of this lovely pub would be great. Here is another picture of it dated 1989

The Duke Of York was situated on Hockley Hill. This was an M&B pub, and was a listed 19c Georgian building with a Victorian frontage. It had a fine Victorian interior, but the pub closed in the 1990s, and the interior was stolen in 1996. The building collapsed in a storm, November 2006. Delisted in 2007, the above photo shows the site of the pub. |
it means all the lovely original victorian bar sparks...it was a joy to behold...I passed that pub on the bus many times.
I wonder what was meant by 'the interior was stolen' ?!
Urban myth has it that the interior was stolen to order for an American client.hi lwoods and welcome from memory the last time i was in the duke of york was 1993..below is some info about its sad demise..lyn

It wouldn't surprise me!Urban myth has it that the interior was stolen to order for an American client.
The roof leaked badly for several years, as they do when the slates have been stolen and I wouldn’t be surprised if some load bearing walls were tampered with when the fittings were removed.i always found it odd that a pub that size could collapse during a storm..maybe some sort of weakness in the structure...it must have been reported in the newspapers but we wont find it in the newspaper archives.

that seems a reasonable assumption brian..thanksThe roof leaked badly for several years, as they do when the slates have been stolen and I wouldn’t be surprised if some load bearing walls were tampered with when the fittings were removed.
My late Dad ran this pub in the 80's, I spent first two years of my life living there. Would love to know if anyone frequented it around this time
Love all the photos, had never seen it before. Too young to remember.
