The anoraks in this area are in for a treat tomorrow,The Duchess of Sutherland is arriving in Derby at
teatime. The maroon giant, Steam train 6233 will roll into Derby station at 4.57 pm, to collect passengers
before contunuing towards its final destination in Scarborough The 73 foot long loco is making one of its
special trips after being returned to running order at The Midland Railway Centre at Ripley. A spokeswomen
for the Trust said"She has now become an icon in the world of railway preseravation. Bernard

A great loco to see at speed. Some years ago I saw it ( her ? ) approach Leominster Stn from the south. The track is level but uneven. The loco was not stopping so was travelling at quite a speed. It was rolling quite alarmingly but looked spectacular as it passed through the station.Even when stationary the Duchess exudes the feeling of power.
I have seen an A4 Pacific do the same thing but not with the same sense of drama. It sort of minced its way through swinging its handbag. Very Bonar as Ken Williams and Hugh Padick would have said.

Bearnard when did they drop the number 4 ?, in the book 46233 Dave

Dave, it's the other way round 40000 was added to LMS locos numbers following nationalisation in 1948, i.e 6233 becomes 46233, preserved loco will carry either number, depending on the date and colour scheme the loco has been restored to.

Colin thanks :) Dave

According to David Jenkinson's book 'Profile of the Duchesses', 6233 (46233) was built at Crewe 18th July 1938 and was initially allocated to Camden,

moving to Crewe in 1944 until 1960 when it re-located to Edge Hill and in doing so became the sole member of the class to be shedded there.

It was finally withdrawn 8th February 1964 and earmarked for preservation by Butlins.

The big LMS engines were my favourites, even over GWR Kings and LNER streamliners. They look just what they are - 160 tons of steam muscle!
