Drummonds- from the Glasgow area

judith allport

master brummie
I am trying to obtain details of my great great grandparents but not getting anywhere fast. William Drummond married Ann Brown. At the time of their son Colin's wedding in 1865 William was deceased. Colin was born in about 1841 ain Appin Argyllshire. I suspect there were more siblings but? who. I have no idea of William and Ann's date of birth, or who their respective parents were. Could someone look up this information for me please as free BMD dont seem to have it on their site. Many thanks.

Re: The Drummonds from the Glasgow area

there is this record on the 1841 scottish census. the original is not available but the main info is transcribed by ancestry

william drummond 60 b. in argyll, scotland. he was a weaver
ann drummond 40 b. argyll, scotland
mary drummond 10, ann drummond 7, robert drummond 5, isabella drummond 4, john drummond 1.

their address is listed as inverfolla, appin, argyll.

Re: The Drummonds from the Glasgow area

and in 1851 - address cosach, lismore and appin, argyll

ann drummond 54
peter drummond 18
bell drummond 12 (a daughter) presumably isabella
colin drummond 10
margaret drummond 8

strange that the childrens names dont match from 1841.

Re: The Drummonds from the Glasgow area

Thank you very much Shera, I had found on the 1851 census a Colin aged 10, Bell(Isabella) 12 Peter 18, Ann 54 but no William. Ann's maiden surname was Brown. This family lived at Cosach. How would I know which one was the right one? Judith

Re: The Drummonds from the Glasgow area

i would say they are both the correct ones. william must have died sometime after margaret was born (and he was much older than ann). all i can think is that the children were either elsewhere on the census day, or that the names are first, second names etc.

anns age is probably correct on the 1851 - in 1841 it was rounded up or down. isabellas age isnt far out either and is a more unusual name. in the 1841 they were living appin which is correct.

hard to say really, but i would think its the same family.

Re: The Drummonds from the Glasgow area

well it would have to be parish records . ancestry does have some argyll parish records but nothing at all coming up for drummond. i think you would have to contact them in scotland but ive no idea of any address etc. there is a website called scotlands people. perhaps you could try them?? ive heard they are pretty good.

Re: The Drummonds from the Glasgow area

Thank you Shera, I have looked on Family Search. It would appear that William was born in 1780-1781 married 13.06.1828 Some discrepancy as to whether John was born in 1840 or on 21.03.1829. Maybe one died and the second was called John. It would make more sense there were two of them as Mary was born in 1831 ie 3 years after the marriage and considering they had Mary 1831, Peter 29.04.1933, Ann 9.07.1834, Robert 26.03.1836, Isabella, 06.02.1838, Colin c 22.02.1840, John 1840? Margaret 26.06.1842 it seems feasible the first child John was born in 1829 soon after the marriage. How would I find out Williams dob and his parents names? Your expertise would be appreciated. Many thanks

Re: The Drummonds from the Glasgow area

i honestly dont know other than to try "scotlands people". i havent had any ancestors from scotland myself so have no experience of this.

i think you are right about john, often a child was named the same as one that had died.

i looked on familysearch.org but cant see the birth of william drummond (not in the area you want anyway). perhaps someone else on the forum has some ideas?
