Hi Iain,

I can confirm that the LL prefixed badges are for Scotland, so very
possibly your father's. I'm sure others will be able to tell you the
best way to trace it .

Kind regards

Dave

thanks for looking and thanks for the link. the link seems to deal with buses timetables photos and bus companies. good try tho. ta

I think badge numbers started at 1001 (I've never heard of or seen one lower) and were issued following the 1931 transport act, so that badge must have been a very early issue, almost certainly in the first few days of the legislation. Your father may not have been the first to have it though, there were re-issues of returned badges (known to the drivers as "dead men's badges") where a badge was returned to the traffic commissioner if a driver retired from driving or moved to another traffic area, (as he would have been issued with that area's badge at his next licence renewal). You would need to find the corresponding paper licence the was issued with the badge to him for the date.
The requirement to have and display a badge was withdrawn at, I believe, the time of the 1986 traffic act and very few original badges are seen displayed by crews today. Some operators do issue their own, however, in replacement.

thanks for that Lloyd. so am i looking for a government site like DVLC which issued such licences?

Hi Lloyd

Going back to the 1950s, I can't remember ever seeing a 3 digit badge either, although plenty of 4 digit ones, both for drivers and conductors.

How long did their licences last, as I can well remember one outer circle conductor who I knew for several years, and he had a BB badge for all that time.

Kind regards

Dave

Could be like a chap at Digbeth with a North-Western area (CC) badge, who renewed it from his parents address in New Brighton! Licences lasted five years.

They were issued by the area traffic commissioners, and I doubt if any information about them survives now - it would be protected anyway as it contains personal data.

Hi Lloyd

Many thanks for the info, - that explains it nicely.

Kind regards

Dave
