Downes John Digbeth and Nechells

hello eileen in reply to your query ,i lived in nechells park rd from 1950 to 1973 and there was no pub on cheatam st ,but there was a pub called the white hart on the corner of nechells park rd and railway terrace i think this was how they spelt hart hope this helps you as this is my first time replying to some one as i have just joined the group

hi and welcome...its a long shot but i wonder if he is related to my downes family who i believe ran a couple of pubs in the digbeth area...

A John Downes is listed as a retail brewer in the 1855 directory. and at 336 Cheapside in 1858. In the 1861, 1862 and 1866 directories John is at the Swan . In the 1867, 1868, 1872, 1873, etc editions up till 1882 he is at the Red lion in Soho road (or street as it was then called) . By the 1870s he is also an iron merchant, and also patents, including, according to the directory, one for a steam engine. No other John Downes in the licensed trade is listed in those years. It would seem unlikely that the John at the Swan should suddenly appear, and then, after the Swan , disappear from the trade.

John Downes, born about 1817 in Shropshire is my Second Great Grandfather. He had an unknown Pub at 115, Digbeth, Swan Inn, Nechells Park Road and Church Tavern, Water Works Street, Aston. Died Upper Sutton Street, Aston 26/5/1871. Unable to find his parents in my research so far.

hi malcolm... from memory i have rellie albert henry downes at 102 digbeth he was gone by 1904 my notes say this was the clements vaults...could be related to your john downes..i will have to double check my notes later on today
