A John Downes is listed as a retail brewer in the 1855 directory. and at 336 Cheapside in 1858. In the 1861, 1862 and 1866 directories John is at the Swan . In the 1867, 1868, 1872, 1873, etc editions up till 1882 he is at the Red lion in Soho road (or street as it was then called) . By the 1870s he is also an iron merchant, and also patents, including, according to the directory, one for a steam engine. No other John Downes in the licensed trade is listed in those years. It would seem unlikely that the John at the Swan should suddenly appear, and then, after the Swan , disappear from the trade.
