Becky. Can you tell us the birth name of your grandfather, and if he was given the name of his father. It all helps.

Barrie.

Re: Edward Ernest Downes

yes my grandad was given the name Leonard on his birth certificate, later changed to Frederick Leonard by his adopted parents,he was adopted as a baby, his mother was called Jane Downes(formerly Thompson) although i can find no record of there marriage,i have found an Edward E Downes who did serve in the Cheshire regiment have found no more clues ,ive done a search for the address aswell but cant find it either. My family are all from Birmingham going back as far as i have been able so i think it likely Edward would of been too ,but then again i know all the information given on the birth
cetificate could also be false.

Re: Edward Ernest Downes

Becky I have found a marriage for a Jane Thompson September quarter 1904 ref Birmingham 6D 85, On the same page same ref no is Edwin Downes. There are usualyy 4 people on each page so it doesn't necessarily mean it is the right marriage, but it might be worth ordering the certificate.

Re: Edward Ernest Downes

:) Yes, thankyou will look into it,Becky.

Re: Edward Ernest Downes

I have just read this old post - I think that Edwin Downes and Jane Thompson were my Mom's parents. Interested to hear from anyone about this. MY Mom is nearly 94 and was born Alice Downes in June 1914.

Re: Edward Ernest Downes

I should also say that my Mom knew her Father as Edward, not Edwin Downes. They lived on Sherborne Street, Ladywood.
