Thanks Lloyd Re: Dowling

Thanks Lloyd this is the family.

I'm looking for anyone else delving into the Dowlings. They are not an easy family to trace forward beyond 1901, or back to their Irish roots. There must be Dowlings out there, met enough of them when I lived in Birmingham!

Not my family but here they are in 1891 censuc. Seems some of the children stayed at home with Mom till they were quite old. John lived very close and gave his children the same names as was common back then. Thomas became a Police Sargeant. Sorry couldn't find James, but he may have been outside the area of Warwickshire. Ellen may have married

Thanks Pomgolian Re: Dowling

Thanks.

We had picked up the 1891 census for Widow Ann and the remaining children living at home. We also picked up the death of Ann's husband as he was alive in the 1881. In 1901 the family seems to have broken up and we had difficulty in finding any of the people.

What we didn't find where the sons and their families in 1891. Big thanks. This will help us bridge the gaps to some of them in 1901.

Appreciate this.

Oh my goodness! I am sooooo excited!!!!! I am also trying to find out more about the Dowling family, and this thread has proved to be so valuable to me!! I could cry! My grandfather was Clarence Dowling, son of Philip Dowling, who was son of William DOwling! I don't really have that much info so this is absolutely wonderful. If anyone wants to get in touch with me, please send me an instant message/PM as I would love to find out more especially from the Irish side! Clarence was born in 1899, and I remember sending him down the bookies for me when I was a child to put my Grand National bets on (10p each way!). The day he came back with a pound note and told me I could keep it was fantastic!!

Keep in touch folks!

Jayne

Thre was a shop in Witton Road, a Pork Butcher, George Dowler. He was there during my childhood in the 40's and still there in the 1950's. He didn't live in Witton, I think his home was Dudley. His wife was Phylis, he called her Phyl and I recall that they adopted a little girl. George was a really lovely man, very well thought of by everyone.

In 1861 Patrick and Ann have an elder daughter with them Maria age 15

Maria Dowling married John Gill , June 1863 Aston,ref 6d 422

In 1891 they are in Percy Road Yardley.
John gill age 49 born Roscommon Ireland
Maria age 46 born Galway Ireland
James 16,Bridget 12,Ellen 8,Agnes 7,William 5, John 3.

Perhaps that is where they all came from ,Galway.

Thanks Folks.

Spot on Alberta. These are part of my family tree. My Mothers sister married a later John Gill in the same line.

If anyone out there needs more information let me know.

Thanks for the link Pomgolian, it appears that most of the early Birmingham Irish came from this neck of the woods. Still trying to pin down the Gills and Dowlings.

Hi jackie
Clarence Dowling was my uncle by marriage. definatley the same Clarence. You probably know by now that he had several wives. Would love to hear from you. Sandra
