Hello, My name is Glenn Goodman, eldest son of Frank Goodman featured in one of the photographs. Frank is now 80 and fighting fit, does voluntary work at Solihull hospital, also still see Albert Mundy (Nipper) when he pops in to visit my Dad. Fantasic photos, also great to see my Grandad Horace Goodman. I shall make sure they both see these great photographs....Thank you so much for putting them on here.

Hi Glenn,

Being as I am a kentish lass, I need some kind persons help to understand what Dollman street looked like in the old days. My grandparents both lived on the street one at number 40 and the other at 26 in the very early 1900's when they were children, unfortunalty time has passed and I do not have the option to ask them questions such as what was the name of the local school you would have attended, what was the name of the local parishes? If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

My grand parents lived at 2 Back 104 Dollman Street in 1971.

If anyone as any old photo's of those roads or the areas then please let me know! :)

Would love to see where they lived etc and learn more about the area.

My Great-aunt lived at 120 Dollman Street at one point, I've been looking to see where it was on Google Maps and I think it must have gone now in the clearance of Birmingham

Les's Cafe I'm fairly sure is number 131 in which case your great aunt's house would have been one of those on the left, probably near the lamp-post.

This was down by 120 dolman road opposite I believe I lived there in the 1960 we moved out in 1971 . This road was the best place I have ever lived it was classed as slums but only people who lived in these areas really know what that word really means. It defines the houses not the brilliant people who lived in them

totally agree with you...i was born and lived in my nans back to back until i was 5 or 6 and it was kept spick and span despite the condition of the house

An aerial view from 1935 showing approx. position of #120 (unfortunately in the shade on a sunny day).
Wow thanks, both @brummy-lad & @MWS

@Colroy07 You are so right, my nan loves talking about living in back-to-back houses in this area, it's completely different for people who have the lived experience.

You can tell even though she and her family had a hard life they enjoyed their family, their neighbours, the streets and the Birmingham they knew.

Thanks all.

We lived at 140 dolman street from 1964 until ready for demolition around 1971 . My mom used to know all the folk down that street . I hung around the lad from the outdoor on the corner (130). About 5 doors from 120 .

Does anybody know if there was a train track behind Dollman Street or close to it? Nan said behind Dollman street but it could be that they lived in the houses behind Dollman street but the train track was somewhere else

My nan remembers a man and woman by the name of Fanny Stafford and maybe Joe Stafford having a son who worked on a railway and got killed on the railways a shunt.

On the map I posted on post #14 you can see the train tracks on the left. Duddeston station would be just off the top of the map.

You can also see the tracks on the photo on post #15.

If you look at this old map Alma Cescent had houses to almost the top but these disappeared before I moved in to 140 dolman street . Once we moved in the top was just bomb peck.and in 1967 I went upstairs in the out door on the corner . The complete roof at the back had been covered with sheets since the war as it had been damaged .

Thanks, I thought that might have been a track but I wasn't hundred per cent.

Thanks for this. Nan also remembers there being a fire on the street that gutted the house. I try to write as much as I can that Nan tells me just in case it helps anybody on this forum.
