Post #29 - Is the Apollo Tavern connected to the Apollo Gardens? I was investigating boxing in Birmingham and Pedrocut kindly found me some cuttings. I'll have a look over the next few days and find the one that mentions the gardens.

Hi Lady P. I have no idea. the only info i have is what pub historian told me earlier and the 1901 cencus showing he lived at the apollo tavern. G

I'v just looked at wikipedia and think you may be right. just trying to find confirmation thanks G

The Apollo was at 172 Great Charles St. It was on the east side very close (about 4 buildings away) to the junction with Vaughton st south. Have not yet been able to exactly pinpoint a building on the map. Enoch is listed there in the 1901 census (from where you presumably got the information). A John Worrall is listed there in the 1900 Kellys, which would probably refer to 1899, (could this be a mistake in the surname, referring to a relative?). Someone new is listed in 1903 edition.

I think that this discussion of the Apollo Tavern may have to go in another thread - anyway, the gardens closed in 1751. However, the Apollo Tavern was certainly trading in 1791. BUT, this would be an old establishment with an old licence and NOT the beer house in Charles Henry Street run by Enoch Morroll. This was a later house that probably referenced the earlier establishment. Sorry if this is a disappointment.
