Cumberland Terrace Hockley

My grandfather and grandmother lived, according to family history, in the Jewelry quarter at, or around, Carver Street and have 13 Cumberland Terrace as an address.

I have been unable to find this address on the 6 inch OS map of 1888-1913 or anywhere else. I don't know whether it was a small street off Carver Street or whether it was somewhere else.

If anybody can solve this mystery I would be very grateful for any advice.

The problem is that many terraces had names but not many were printed on maps. It is usually a case of trying to track via census.
I have found one named on St Luke's Road but that is Highgate and a fair way from the jewelry quarter so would doubt that was it. I will keep looking. In ht emean time what was your grandparents surname?

I assume they are William and martha Mason. As the terrace is listed between 72 and 73 Carver Street I would assume it is set of houses at right angles to the street - it may even be a name given to one of the courts. A later map shows a narrow passageway leading to buildings at the back - this could be it.
This is, I have to say, my best guess and may not be right. Kelly's lists houses on bothe sides of the terrace which is why I think it is roughly half way between Warstone Lane and Tenby Street.

I know this is an old thread but I may have something to add. My great grandfather was a keen angler & caught many specimen fish from the late 1800's until around 1914, when war broke out. He was fairly affluent & had at least 10 fish mounted via a taxidermist. On some of the cases are labels that state " Specimen Fish Mounter" Cumberland Terrace, Carver St, Birmingham, so I presume there was a taxidermist working from here. The latest date marked is 1910 & ive attached a photo of the label. I can't find any other info online so maybe your relative was a Taxidermist

Hi Lyn
Thanks for the welcome & for spotting the error, ( predictive text, changed now).
My father recently passed & ive been going through some of the paperwork so I'll keep diving through for some more info. All I can say for certain, is his name was Harry Hartland & I believe he ran the sir Robert peel in peel street, winson green for a time & also lived in peel Street after that. I know peel Street is no longer as it was, but remember it up until the late 70's. My grandmother continued to live in the peel Street house, up until the compulsory purchase in the early 80's if I remember correctly?.
