master brummie
Picture Inspector George Cross taken at the old Newhall st. Home with car number 395, is there any BCT staff who remember sadly Uncle George is no longer with us but he is sadly missed.

What's happen to Car 395?

I'm tracing my Family history and I'm after in information about his father & mother, Gran & Grandad Cross there names were George & Emily (Pem) they lived at 6 Sandy Lane, Aston.

Grandad was also a motorman on the trams the No 2 Erdington.

I would like to find any information about relatives of both unfortunately I don't have gran's maiden name.

Please can anybody help.

Ray if you can give us a few dates we may surprise you... In fact we often surprise ourselves about what we are able to find out... We really are a nosy lot on here... Just read a few of the 'Family research' threads and you will see it's true.... :)

re photograph it looks like the photograph was taken in the old science museum Newhall Street could it have been when the tram was first displayed and possibly a newspaper report

Yes your right it was the old Science & Tech. in Newhall Street.

It was in it was a new local called Focus dated Sept 20th 1989.

He was also on the the local Radio, the lunch time Rosie & ? show they called him Tram George.

Before he died he also appeared on Carl's Sunday afternoon show, reading his very lenghty poem Farewell old Faithfull about the last tram.

You asked about the tram. On post 43016 last year Peter Walker said it was in the Think Tank. I assume that is true, though the post was dated the 1st April !!
Mike

Yes Tram 395 is in Thinktank.

A search of electoral rolls for 'Cross' at 'Sandy Lane' gives the following details:
1918 - Absent voter George Spencer Cross, in the 14th R.W.R. (Royal Warwickshire Regiment?)
1920 - George Spencer Cross, with an Ada Cross and a William Albert Didsbury.
1925 - George Spencer Cross, with an Ada Cross.
also in 1925: an allotment at 1, Wood Lane, Erdington. (Now the site of the Esso Petrol distribution depot)
1930 - George Spencer Cross, with an Ada Emily Cross and a George Howard Samuel Cross.
1939 - George Spencer Cross, with an Ada Emily Cross and a George Howard Samuel Cross.

George H.S. Cross born 2nd Quarter 1913, Mother's maiden name Jukes.

WW1 Medal record card for a George S Cross in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (and later in the Gloucestershire regiment)

George Spencer Cross birth registered 3rd quarter 1887, Aston. Volume 6d page 406,
George S Cross marriage to Ada E Jukes registered 3rd quarter 1911, Aston, vol 6d page 352.

Hi Lloyd.

Many many thanks for the information about my Grandparents your a star

I've only recently become interested in my family tree. basicly I got really interested after reading Carl's book Birmingham Undaunted it really was compulsive reading.

I was evacuated from 4 Sandy Lane to Hagley in Worc during the war.

It bought so many memories as young as I was they have remained with me all my life.

I can remember comng home from Hagley the morning after the bombing of the bottom of Victoria Rd, Lichfield Rd and Church Lane it I believe itwas one of the last raids on Birmingham.

The trams could only go as far as "Taylors" the toy shop then they backed up the loop back up to Aston Cross in to town.

A little footnote to this which we didn't find out till about 2000, Uncle George Cross junior was also a motorman at the time of this raid and come up with this revalation.

During that raid a large bomb was dropped on this site landing under the tram tracks in Lichfield Rd. near to Dr. Gould Surgcorner of Sandy lane but it failed to go off, RE's made it safe but didn't remove the bomb till much late.

BCT permanent way laid a temporary track over the bomb to allow traffic to commence, Uncle George Cross drove the first tram over this bomb on the temporary tracks.

None of the family was aware of event, I call it a very brave act, but there must been many acts like this during the W11.

I wonder if any body up in Brum has any details of the raid or pictures.

Lloyd could you recommend a good site for getting this information having been bitten by the bug, one main problems seems to be once you signed up it's difficult to unsubscribe because they have your credit card details.

Again many thanks for all your efforts, perhaps we can communicate again.

Ray from a thoughly WET Devon.
