Courtyards and yards of brum

Here are some family pics of mine, my family lived 14 back of 94 (back of 88 after bombing in war) Coplow Street in Ladywood, what a nice place to put them. The middle one is for the Coronation, and in the bottom one my nan and grandad are the ones with their arms round each other. Alot of court photos are either women working or children playing, so I like taht it's my grandad playing with his son in the court. My grandad's parents lived next door at #13.

Fantastic pics. Although I never lived in those areas I know people who did. We just don't know how lucky we are these days, do we?

of course the housing conditions were not top notch back in the day...thats how it was back then and certainly no fault of the people who lived in these properties but one thing stikes me looking all the personal family photos including my own is that everyone looks happy enough...folk did the best that they could with what they had...keep em coming folks..

Yes, brilliant pics cuppa, and by God, didn't they look SMART! We may not have had much, and stuff was handed down and begged from older rellies, but I can remember the getting ready rituals....grandad and father even wore smart shoes, handerchief and pens in pocket, and collar and tie for the beach (Weston, natch)....so did Uncle Thomas at Teignmouth.....

Hi Bernie,

Yes I remember all those shops. In fact, the newspaper and sweet shop was much later taken over by my old friend Les Ward. The chip shop was, of course bombed. I fetched many a drink for my dad from the off licence on the corner. Happy Days. Thanks a lot.

Bernie will have to show dad the pic of the chip shop on Green Lane, he was brought up in Victoria Street till he was 9, born in 1931, bet he will remember it!
Paul, mom still uses Camp coffee to make coffee cakes with, swears its the best way to make them, as teenagers, my friend and I used to have milky Camp thought we were really grown up!

Hi Sisersue Ilived in Charles Road Bordesley Green end till I was 12 and Grange Road by Muntz Street till I was 22 , me and the wife bought camp coffee about 20 years ago out of nostalgia , it was absolutley terrible

I'm a bit late coming to this thread - someone said it's the best thread on the Forum, and I agree. Has anyone got pictures of Montague Street, which was in Bordesley and ran from Great Barr Street to Lawley Street. The Cattle Market was on it or near it. I ask because my old man lived there, after he and his mother moved to Birmingham from Bedford just after the start of WW1.

Thanks in advance,

G

Bernie, I must have strange tastes still love milky Camp now!!
Dads family were in Victoria Street for many years,great- grandad ran his own milk round from there, must have been a squash in the house with g/grandad and my 3 maiden great-aunts and bachelor great-uncle plus my grandad, dad and his brother and sister, but dad has good memories of it.

Thanks for the pix of Montague Street, guys. My old man lived there (address and type of accommodation unknown) until I think the early 1920's, and he and his mother then moved to somewhere around Victoria Road, Aston. I know he went to a school in or near Garrison Lane, but that's about all I do know about him. He was never very open about his past, for reasons I never really understood.

Hi Sue,

My family lived in Carlton Road, next street to Victoria Street, for many years. I wonder if you could let me know your Dads surname as I might have known his family. I was born in 1927 so a little older than your dad and I attended Somerville Road School. I bet your dad remembers Holmes shop that sold clothes and Tennants furniture removers which was bombed probably on the same night that the chip shop in Green Lane was bombed.

As one Small Heathen to another please give him my regards.

My Grandad (Ernest John Williams) was living at number 34 Montague Street (Digbeth) in 1911, with his uncle and his family....love the photo in posting 292......

Yes, they look a right pair of characters, don't they? The only surname I can ever remember my dad mentioning from his very early days was Hartley, but I don't know if they lived in Montague Street. Was the street badly bombed during the War, does anyone know?
