My nan from Brum was taking about taking Mary Whitehouse's short hand and typing classes that took place in Corporation street. Does anybody know anything about this??
Was it Lawrence's College (later Pitmans)? If so, please see this link to a specific thread about the college

The photo was taken between Fore Street and Cherry Street. Part of the frontage on the first storey has been changed, the deco-style section having since been removed and a drainpipe installed. Maybe the frontage was damaged during WW2 and replaced/covered over above the shop (Swears and Wells). Not sure it was a temporary cover as it looks like there's been newer brickwork at that spot.
The bus stop (now tram stop ?) is still in the same position today.

The right side of the street in this view shows most of the early buildings still in place.
And the view looking up Corporation Street towards Cherry Street. An interesting view from Stephenson Place with fire ladders and Thomas Attwood statue in view. On the left we see the rear of the (white stone) old Midland Bank building in New Street. To the right the Exchange building, now the site of HSBC and the 'ramp'. 
Yes John, lots of natural, (scatchy !) woollen outerwear and gaberdene being replaced by man-made fabrics. Almost everyone is wearing a hat of course. Today anything goes in terms of what's acceptable !
Good to see the clock remains, although I suspect the clock face has been changed over time to include the name of new businesses occupying the shop premises,

Viv that photo must hane been taken ftom the old Queens Hotel that fronted New Street Station back in the day
I can't be sure. If not there, maybe the other end of Corporation Street by the Law Courts and Central Hall ? Tricky one to place. I do know this is dated 1925, and must be spring/summer.

I think that, from visual memory, A Sparks is correct in his opinion. C&A was not near the Law Courts.

I think the corner of the building which appears to have some lettering near the top may be one of the entrances to the City Arcade?
So that position suggests the cupola(s) on top of the building in the distance were those of Newbury's Departmental Store. The photo is dated 1925, so a year later, the building became Lewis's.

Another view of that in post #283. 'Manchester Warehouse' (left) I think originally supplied goods from Manchester, but had probably broadened it's merchandise by the time of this photo (possibly 1910/20s?)
This view from the position of Cherry Street can still be matched with a fair number of buildings still standing. The left side is quite changed, but many on the right side are still recognisable. Manfields Boots (right), I think, later became Dolcis. Hadn't realised that Mansfields was an old boot-making business. Think it might be Englands shoe shop on the far left beneath the 'Billiard Table' company.
