Convention Centre

I worked for the project managers who worked on the Convention Centre and I do remember that remains were found when the ground was being excavated. This morning I have had to clean out my loft due to insulation taking place this week and I found all my old history stuff. This is a piece from the Metro dated 25 February 1993.

Hello. I am new to this site and don't seem to be able to view your photos. I am researching the moving of the Colonnade which used be in centenary square now in St Thomas Peace Garden. Do any of your photos show the Colonnade in its original location opposite the Hall of Memory

Beat regards Richard

Which photos are you trying to access? There is a notice at the top of page stating that many photos were lost when the site was hacked into.

Hi Bernard

As part of my MSc in Historic Conservation I am doing a study of the Memorial colonnade not only for its pertinence as we move close to the 100 year anniversary of WW1 but because it was removed and rebuilt back in the 1990s. I am looking for any photographs and background information on its original instigation and construction and its removla and re-erection at St Thomas Peace Garden. Anything that forum members might have would be really appreciated

Kind regards R

I would have thought that there must be many photos of the Memorial Colonnade as it used to be the place to go for photographs after a wedding had been held over the road you would see the happy couples dashing across Broad street to have their first photos together, this is a view from the hotel over the road https://www.flickr.com/photos/dofartshavelumps/8423821310/in/set-72157632632841664

Hi

Many thanks for the aerial. And yes I have thought there may be man y photos out there but no luck so far. Anything else you might have - anecdotes as well as photos?

Cheers

garsde, try the forum search (top right hand) there are many threads with reference to the Colonnade/Broad Street/Hall of Memory/Peace Gardens, I'm afraid you'll have to go through them individually.

Hint:- On threads with a large number of posts use the "search thread" button

RIP David Bucknall.

Carolina. Much appreciated. David Bucknall was a major figure on the Birmingham property and construction scene for over three decades. Like Clive Dutton who also died this week he has left a significant legacy of new construction in this city.

Garside520, I worked for Bucknalls in the 80s and so did my daughter, firstly on Hagley Road and then moved to Scotland and Edward Street. I have just been speaking to my daughter about it and we both agreed what a great man he was to work for. Introducing free lunches, whenever a new contract was awarded there was always celebratory drinks. Parties at his house and his kindness to let one of the younger guys to borrow his fantastic car whilst he was on holiday. I have worked for over 50 years but his company will always be one of the better ones. Sad loss.

If Guilbert still retains the photographs at the beginning of this thread, we would be grateful if he could repost them. I have half a dozen of them (thought I had more) but would be grateful if he could repost
