Confectioner - Hurst St and Inge St. 1800's

Heath Street

master brummie
Whilst researching past family (Osborne) born in Kidderminster I came across census for 1861 - 1891 showing a Mr Joseph Osborne trading as a confectioner at Court 24 Inge Street and 79 Hurst Street, so surprised to note that this was the area of the newly re-formed back-to-bacs which I visited last year (they look nothing like the ones I grew-up in - on walking around with my brother we wondered where the wet walls were) I gather that the Inge Street address is demolised would the same be said of Hurst St. and would I be able to find any paperwork/pictures/anything really, giving details of this shop. When Joseph died in 1895 (his wife already having passed away at this time) the business was paaased onto a William Brecknell - confectioner and Charles Cleveley - tallow chandler. Would be grateful for any help - Val - former Heath St. resident.

in the 1858 directory there is a Osborne Jph confectioner 35 Inge st

Joseph Osborne was listed in kellys directory at no 79 Hurst St until the 1895 edition. In 1896 Mrs Mary Osborne took over . She was listed there also in 1897, but by the 1899 edition seems to have gone. Also between the 1897 and 1899 editions the street has been renumbered form consecutive (1,2,3,4…) to odd numbers one side, even the other, and what was no 79 was then no 32, Joseph Howells, cooper. The building was almost opposite Thorpe St , as can be seen on the c 1889 map below. Building long gone, it would seem to be on the site on google now occupied by anytime snacks.

Have a look in the search thread for Milliners Hurst Street, there is a lovely picture of these shops, my aunt used to work at the Milliners.

I found this from the Birmingham Daily Post 14th August 1874 - Joseph Osborne 79 Hurst St applying for a license. There was a long list of names but I have just cropped it to show Josephs.
