Computer help please 2025

when i first started using BHF getting on the internet was dial up using a 56kbps modem i had to buy pre payed top up cards and call a 08 number and wait for all the buzzing and wierd noises to stop and get connected:grinning::grinning:
 
Those were the days Pete. Can't be;live what we went through as the yearsroll on. First computer I had was in 1990 from retoirement money. Bought it from a place in Evesham, well over £1000. Still remember the sticker on it which it said " Huge 64 [whatever].
 
A neighbour tells me that phone land lines are being phased out at the end of the year & replaced by digital. Not wanting to appear thick i didn`t ask him what that that meant?
At the moment i`m with Plusnet and anytime calls so will that continue? Us thick old geezers can`t keep up with modern technology.
 
Traditional phone lines are being phased out . But that does not mean you'll loose your "landline" phone or number- The current "target" is the end of 2027 - but that targets have slipped a few times already. There is absolutely nothing to worry about - Your telephone provider has the responsibility of transferring you to the new system. Age Uk have a web site about the swap-over.

I am also with Plusnet. Last time I renewed my contract with them I asked about this and they informed me that next time I renew my contract I will have to migrate to fibre as the old copper wire system (the Public Switched Telephone Network or PSTN) is being phased out. The also informed me that they will not be providing landlines, so if I need a landline they will transfer me to BT (BT owns Plusnet) or I will have to make my own arrangements.

One thing to be aware of is that a 'landline' when you are on fibre is not powered by the telephone exchange and relies on your router being powered. If there is a power cut to your premises, the landline will not work. This is covered under "What happens if there is a power cut?" in the link kindly provided by Dinger.

I switched to digital some time ago when I upgraded to 500 mps, which reads 512 mps when doing a speed check service. My telephone keeps the original exchange number, which I have had since 1965. My ISP affected the change over and provided the necessary apparatus free of any charge. The installation was done by Open Reach who verified that all was as it should be. Simple mobile phones provide an alternative if there is a power outage.
 
I remember some years back an old geezer saying `why can`t they wait till all the old people die before making changes ` Probably the same person that took her portable tv on holiday to Spain so she could watch coronation street. ( Is that an urban myth? }

Could be I'm having a senior moment, I'm entitled! But I can't get scanner to work. a) It wants new cartridges, I don't want to print I want to scan, so I don't want to put new ones in. I never use it as a printer. I need to bypass this.
I am using Windows with a Epson SX445W. I am trying to use Epson Print and Scan Ap.
Don't do this often must be twelve months since I last did this. I think I'm doing everything the same.
Any simple fixes, please?
 
You are probably not having a senior moment. This has been a very sore point on various forums I frequent for quite some time now. The worst offenders have been HP, but no surprise that others are playing the same game. It may not suit your particular case, but a photo of a document taken with a modern phone can produce very good results, just need to pay attention to the lighting. I presume you have cartridges fitted, and that the printer thinks they have run out, or expired in some way. Perhaps remove the carts, and clean the contact pads for the ink sensing just in case they have oxidised over time and the printer thinks they are missing or can't read them properly. Trouble may be, that if you buy a set of 'compatible' cheap cartridges just to get it going again, the printer might reject them just to be spiteful. Good luck.

When I scan on my HP printer, scanner, copier I don't use an APP. At least I don't think I do - not technical.
I click on the scanner icon in Windows - blue icon with white scanner on it. It connects to my printer (which I must have selected originally) and I scan.

That pretty well sums up what has been my approach but as Andrew says "it's gone spitful". Won't play because I don't use it as a printer I haven't replaced the cartridges so Epson not getting an income. Sort of fair enough I suppose.
 
If you are not going to print anything, dump the printer and get a flatbed scanner. Try a Canon LiDE300, or for better resolution, a 400. They are not much more than a set of genuine printer cartridges, round about £50 for the cheaper one. The big rain forest on line seller has them. Nothing to replace in them, so they won't hold you hostage. Run off USB as long as you have a spare port.

Unlike Canon and HP, Epson all-in-one printers and scanners should still continue to work as scanners, even when the ink has run out - However, It does need the ink cartridge to be installed, and it needs to be a "genuine" Epson print cartride -As per the information in this link below...
