And The Electro Plater Is Turning Metal Colours
Was In Them Days Mainly Nickle Plate And Silver Plate

I used to work in the office of a Electro plating factory in Caroline Street.
I used to have to take the wages round and I can still smell the plating shop.

The women wore rubber boots, long rubber aprons and long heavy rubber gloves, and worked in awful conditions.

I worked for Lustre Finish Anodising in Camden Drive for a couple of years in the sixties, it was part of the Britachrome Group, run by the Wharrads. The parent company was Folkes Engineering. There was just myself in the office, working with the boss (John Wharrad) and every time I had to go into the factory that was another pair of tights gone! The acid would splash up over the plank walkways and burn great holes in 'em. I remember Jimmy McGinn, who lived in King Edwards Road, he was the foreman and a great character.
I used to help with the jigging-up if it was quiet in the office - but they did kit me out with wellies and rubber gloves then. Those enormous vats of acid....no sign of 'elf 'n safety men!
The site of the factory now is derelict and covered in impenetrable weeds (and rats I expect).
