Coldbath Road Hall Green

MJS

proper brummie kid
152 Coldbath Road

Hello

Would anyone know if there was a nursing home or hospital at this address in the 1960's.

I think it would have been around where Mosley Golf Club is now

Hope someone can help

Hi MJS

I don't remember any nursing home or hospital on Coldbath Rd in the 60's. In fact I don't think the side with houses on that the numbers went as high as 152. The land where the golf course was Jack Morris the butchers farm prior to that. Coldbath rd is in Moseley or even Billesley but certainly not Hall Green. Do you mean Cole Bank Rd? I have to say that I am quoting this from memory so I could be wrong.

Hello Phil

Me and my dippy digit!!!!!!! No It is Coldbath Road but I intended to put Moseley.

The reason for my inquiry is we are doing family research and find that my husband's great grandmother is recorded as dyiny at 152 Coldbath Road but her place of residence is recorded as their family home. So i wondered whether there had been a nursing home on that site at one time.

Thank you for your reply

If you look on Google Earth Street View you will find Coldbath Road and it looks pretty much as it did when my Dad used to stop off at one of the small shops that were along there. No larg houses so it would have been the place where she lived.

I think there was a large house on Coldbath Road at the junction with Yardley Wood Road, it was demolished and new houses built on the site, must have being early 60's, seem to remember passing there on the no. 11 bus on my way to college.

Yes Colin you are right - I seem to recall it was owned by Birmingham City Council. Not sure if it was Health or Teaching related. I used to lkive a hundred or so yards away but only up until about 3 years old so no first hand memories to speak of.

Going back to the original query - in the map in post #7 the houses opposite the marked house (39) go from 144 to 157 so there was a 152. It is listed in the erolls with the Gibbs - last I can access is 1965 so the house went after that date - presumably bought by the Golf Club.
Annie died in 1967 and her address is given as 152 Coldbath Road.

According to an O.S. map of 1954 number 152 was part of a row of prefabs. There was an article about the prefab dwellers in that row mentioned here:

Hello all,I'm wondering what the age of the map above of Coldbath road might be please?
On my grandparents marriage certificate it says that they lived individually at 97 & 99 coldbath road in 1928.
I am wondering if the houses that are there now,are where they were living then...
On rightmove one of the houses nearby has an old fireplace on the top floor.
I've not worked, out who else was living at these addresses at the time...
They got married at St Agatha Church in Moseley.
My grandfather Charles Gittins at the time was the owner 215 Stoney lane Post Office & Stationers.
My grandmother was Lillian Jones.
Thank you for any help with this.

here is todays street view..no 100 is the house on the far left..to the right of that is no 99 then 98 and 97..but were they the same houses that was there in 1928 ?..would think the porches have been added over time also looking at the below 1888 to 1914 map the footprint of houses do look the same as they are now..

They don't seem to be listed on erolls.
Is he Charles Benjamin?
Yes,he is !

He was a Sub postmaster at 215(was bombed in the 2nd world war)/230 Stoney Lane for 50 years til 1957 at least,
& was in the 1ww for 4 years too!

Lillian did the Stationers bit part of the business.
Would you have known them?

No I didn't know them.
I did an eroll search and he came up at 215 Stoney Lane but with abode in Durham Road - 81, I think. That was how voting was listed back then

I suspect the Coldbath Road address was a convenience address so they could marry at St Agnes. Little checking went on back then as it was so much harder than today.

Yes,thank you.
I did wonder about this,as before this their living arrangements weren't too fancy.Yes,my mums address was at one time 81 Durham Rd.
Later in life, they were able to live I think in Northfield Rd before Lillian moved,a while after sadly Charles, had died.

Shame you didn't know them
Hopefully I will come across someone that did!
But it is a long time ago now!

This was the eroll for 15th Oct 1927 to 14th Oct 1928
Exactly the same names 1926 to 1927
and 1928 to 1929
No mention of Charles Gittins
