Would it be possible for some of you lovely Brummies to give me a hand with one of my elusive ancestors?

His name was John Coates born Birmingham circa 1854/55. He later married Mary Fraser on 18/10/1883 and they lived in Camberwell, Surrey (Now part of Greater London). I had always thought his father was William Coates of Birmingham BUT when digging around his marriage banns his father is listed not as William but JOHN:cry:?

And this is where I need your help - with his father who I think may have been married to Ann. She, we think was born in Scotland but after that the trail goes cold. I am located down south unfortunately so cannot go to the local archives to do look ups but would appreciate any help or contact with others looking into the same family and would gladly share any info and photos that I have:).

Have you considered this birth in 1854?

John Coates Births Birmingham 1854 6d 84.

The certificate should give the fathers name and the mothers maiden name.

As you probably already know, there is a John Coates on the 1861 census with the father William and the mother Ann, William born B'Ham and Ann born Scotland.

If you could give the names of any siblings, he could be pinned down on the census.

I am pretty sure that John Coates* was born 1854 Birmingham but the jump I need to make is his parents. Was his father William or John, John being the name on his marriage banns.

John Coates's siblings were 9 in total Mary Ann c1849; William 1852; Robert 1854; Elizabeth 1859; Benjamin 1861; Annie 1865; Jane 1867; Thomas 1870; Martha 1873.

I would like to find out for definite if John's father was John but I am getting very confused. I could not find it on FreeCen 1861 any ideas?

They are on the 1861 census in Birmingham. The fathers name is William and the mothers name is Ann.

Also on the census are Mary Ann 12. William 9. Robert 7. John 5. Elizabeth 2.

William Coates died Birmingham 1879.

If you are sure your John had all these siblings then the father is William but I have found another entry which may interest you

Diana age 8 b. Warks
John age 6 b. Warks
Maria 4 b. Clerkenwell

Believe John Coates married Clara Gee West Bromwich 1847

Diana Coates parents John and Clara baptised St Martins Birmingham.

As your John is a brass finisher, like his father in this entry, I think there is a possibility he is yours.

Hearher, just a thought my mother was Ena Beatrice Coates b1906 and she had a grt/aunt Annie Coates who married a Goodwin in 1914 in Aston..is this any of your ancesters......Brenda
 
Alas not my ancestor as the Goodwin connection is more recent ie. me by marriage but thanks for email.

Hi, everyone - Still on the COATES detection trail. I decided to go back to basics and recheck my facts etc. I am now looking for a look up of a BIRTH CERTIFICATE if anyone can help!

The GRO no. is 6d 84 and the name is John Coates in particular I would like to check the name of his father and his occupation.

Any help most gratefully appreciated.

Sorry,you cannot look up birth certificates the only way to find out what is on them is to buy them.
You can ask for the birth certificate to be forwarded only if the fathers name is John.That way you will not have to pay for an incorrect one.
