Coates Ernest

Brock

master brummie
Ernest Coates died on 7th July 1945 when he was run over by a motor car in Birmingham. The accident was horrific ~ poor Ernest was decapitated.
If anyone has access to old newspaper searches I would be very grateful to learn of any newspaper articles relating to the accident & his death.

With many thanks,
Brock.

Re: Ernest Coates

Brock,

Why not go to the central library? They will have copies of the local papers for that period.

Re: Ernest Coates

When you go to the Library Brock, ask to see the book of newspaper cuttings of coroners reports. There will have been a coroners inquest, the papers are held by the coroners office but there is a closure period, I think of 100 years which means you won't be able to see them.

Re: Ernest Coates

Thank you for this advice ~ I have never been to the library before to check this sort of thing out so the advice is very useful & most welcome.

Re: Ernest Coates

I managed to get a copy of a Coroner's report from 1939 for an ancestor who was killed by being struck by a motor car. The information on the report that you get is priceless. I think that the closure period for obtaining such reports has reduced. It will be worth applying for one anyway. Refer to the Birmingham Reference Library web site to obtain the Coroner's adrress etc.

Re: Ernest Coates

Here's the information on Coroner's reports. It does suggest that there is a 75 year closure but i managed to get a copy of a 1939 report??? There is a charge for the report. Mine cost around £15 i think. E-mail your enquiry to them and see what they say. Good luck.

Coroners inquest files are closed to public access for 75 years. If you wish to view records less than 75 years old please contact the Birmingham Coroner:

The Coroners Court
50 Newton Street
BIRMINGHAM

Contents of the records

Coroner inquests file vary enormously in size and content. They may include witness statements, post mortem reports, drawings, photographs and objects presented as evidence. If you wish to view a coroner inquest file, please be prepared for distressing and graphic material which was not intended for public viewing at the time.

Regards

Steve
