I used to live a no 90 cissold street and wet to camden street school dad was a potman at hockley post office thanks lyn mckeown

Hi Chucka theold one im 53 and lived there from 1959 to 1967 thanks lyn
I remember as a kid walking up Clissold passage alonfg the cut and watching the barges being drawn by horses, and the Blacksmiths shops along the side,I was fascinated watching them shoe the horses, then when you got to the end of the passage it came out on Dudly Rd there was a bike shop there, my old man got me a three wheel bike from, and later when I was 17 ish I got myself a Lambretta scooter from the same shop, does anyone remember it ?

i for one do remember that cycle and scooter shop
at the end of the pasage of clissold street
along with fred wakelins shop and the shop next door
which we nick named 2 nd hand roses shop
just before the colledge arms pub
getting back to the clissold passage there was an old bed makers factory just along from the scooter shop in the passage
and it didnt half go up inflames
you could see the flames from the city centre and across hockley brook do you ever recall it ,
when we was nippers we used to spend alot of time along rhere and along the cut
especial on sundays we would drop from the bridge into the wharf and untie a couple of the coal barges
and travel down and around to the monument rd
clock in for the number 8 bus inner circle route
come up and back over to bellis and morcam
loadin bay and release there barges and travel down to ledsam st and the old gas st basin
we thought it was a great crack blocking the cannals with all these loose bargies
it would hace caused head aches for the true bargie people those with the big shire horse tramping down along the tow pathes
i look back in reflection and think what bunch of idiots we was
but we was kids and bored
i have alot of fond old memories of brook fields and the passage would you remember seein the young lad at the end of clissold st passage whomwas totaly deaf and dunb
and of course the good old familys
cor those where the days frank
its a crying shame we cannot put the clock back
but to be honest i would not have made the same misrakes as i did
then and knowing what i know now

What a jog to the memory. I had forgotten the Mona Stores at the corner of Prescott Street. How I would have appreciated it had the camera turned to the opposite corner and photographed the J.S. Manton button factory. I wonder if it is possible that one might turn up?

Feeling a bit of a plonker now. I was having a cuppa in bed and casually searched for Clissold Street, hoping to find a photo or two. It was the button factory I was primarily interested in. If only I had thought to scroll UP! There is the photo I was hoping for! This forum never disappoints. Thank you.

I've just found this entry from the Scottish Shale company on the Lamp Works in Clissold Street, not quite sure what the connection with them is!
There is more information if you click into the various sections near the bottom..
(As an aside, the reason I found it is that there is a Clissold Park near where I live in London and I wondered if there was any connection!)

you would be surprised just how many members only read the last couple of posts of a thread and miss so much info in doing so always best to start from post 1..another tip is when you come back to a thread always read from the last post you have made that way you miss nothing..glad you found the photo you wanted
