Has anyone got information about the canal carrier Thomas Clayton of Oldbury .My son did a school project on this subject ,my father recognised his great uncle Tom who I believe was the man connected with a strike in the year 1923.My families name is Clayton I have been looking for information on Thomas Clayton but have only found about the business side of his life and other canal carriers such as Fellows Morton and Clayton.

Some years ago I used to work with a Billy Clayton in road transport and he had a twin brother named Eddie who was in partnership with Dave Sheldon who ran a transport company in Oldbury. Billy tragically killed himself some years ago but as far as I know,Eddie is still going but I don't think he is still part of the company.I think he was bought out by Dave Sheldon some time ago but I think the compeny is still called Sheldon and Clayton. They are,as far as I know, in one of the units in Wednesbury where the old Patent Shaft used to be.A bit tenuous I suppose but there maybe something you could pick up from that.BobS

Hello BobS,thankyou for this information. The Clayton brothers you speak about are not my branch of the family but what a coincidence my husband worked for P.J Butler of Olbury and new these Clayton brothers.Thankyou once again Mary.

THIS DATA HAS BEEN POSTED ON YOUR THREAD BY MISTAKE SORRY Attela

I just noticed you are a Clayton by birth and have a gypsy connection with the Black Patch.

I understand from an elderly aunt who says that a list of past instances make her believe that William Clayton of 2 Murdock Road Smethwick born 1892 and his father born 1861 may also have strong gypsy connections his family in 1891 are at the same address as in 1901

ie 32 Vittoria Street,Smethwick.
William Clayton age 40 Bricklayers lab b. Horsley (please note they say Horsley Warwickshire on census but I cannot find a Horsley in Warwickshire so was this the right place or an error I do not know)
wife Mary age 29 born Southam Warwickshire

I have no definate evidence of the above but do believe my Aunt all the streets are near the Black patch.

Hope it may be of interest
