Claverdon

Hi All,

I'm just wondering if someone would be able to point me in the right direction. I am wondering if there is a family history society or a forum of some sort for the Calverdon area as I have some questions regarding ancestors there.
Thank you in advance.
Nicole

Hi Lyn,
Thankyou.
I am trying to find a marriage record for a John Wheeler marrying a Catherine. (I have no idea of her maiden name) I am using an educated guess that they were married in 1750 in Claverdon as I have a baptismal record of whom I think is their first child John born in 1751 which I've attached. There are several subsequent children born to the couple. Catherine and John are both buried in St Michael's churchyard so I'm assuming that they lived/worked in Claverdon most of their lives however a marriage bann or document seems to be eluding me!
Thanks
Nicole

could be difficult with parish records but could this one be a contender...john wheeler of claverdon to a katherine whitehead 1749 (not catherine but could just be spelt wrong or vicar just spelt it like that.. we see it often so not too concerned about it )

Hi Lyn,

That's interesting that Katherine/Catherine was from Berkswell. How far is that from Claverdon and are we able to tell if they married in Claverdon? Was it the norm to marry in the bride's parish at that time? I also wonder whether they had children prior to the John born in 1751 and they didn't survive. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it as I'm from Australia and my geography of England isn't the best.

far as i can tell today berkswell comes under the borough of solihull and i think solihull comes under meriden which is where they married..hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge may confirm this but berkswell is only about 11 miles from claverdon

Berkswell and Claverdon are about 9 or 10 miles apart.
Both would have been rural, mainly farming, communities. They still are rural and referred to as villages.

Agree about spelling. Most people like John and Catherine couldn't read or write so would say a name and the spelling was down to the Vicar.

Claverdon to Langley is one of our favourite walks in the spring. These are photos of Claverdon church
