Chromecast

Has anyone purchased a Chromecast for their TV. I have today as I want to project different things from my phone/laptop onto TV screen. Problem: Its that you have to insert into the HDMI at the back of the TV the chromecast connector, but I have to use that port for my Freeview. Hence I cant use freeview, any idea how I get around this. thanks in advance to all you knowledgeable people.

Uh oh.... just found another piece of equipment in the box a USB that will let me use plug in at side of TV and then enable me to put back freeview. phew......... All I have to do now is learn how to use it. Many thanks again folks.

Glad see you have solved it. I find the Chromecast is very good but one thing I found out is that it sometimes carries on receiving a program even when you have changed to watch normal tv. Also it is continually downloading nice screen pics from Google when it is powered on even if you are not watching anything from it. This happened to me when I first used it and I had an email from BT saying I was probably going to exceed my monthly allowance so I switch it off when I am not using it.

Glad you are sorted Carol. Sorry about the brief answer but for some reason when answering with my phone the text goes haywire if I don't take extra care. The splitter or switch would allow you to plug both HDMI leads into the Splitter [or adapter] but as OM says may not work.

Can anyone give me a simple explanation about Google Chromecast. Does it simple plug into the tv, is it reliable ( my pc is about 30 feet from tv ) I have used a streaming device in the past, but over a distance of 20 feet the picture would often pixelate. I don`t want to waste £30 on something unreliable over 30feet.

I still use my Chromecast which I bought maybe two years ago and first mentioned it on the forum here https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/gigabyte-rationing.44158/
It still works perfectly and unlike back then I now have no limits on downloads and speeds of about 45Mbs/sec. Chromecast works by being in contact with your router. You contact it from your PC or iPad via the router and tell it what you want to watch and it picks up the content from the internet after which you can switch off your PC or iPad.

It plugs into an hdmi socket and my router is approx 30ft from the TV and I am about 20ft from from my router. I power it with the supplied charger rather than power from the TV
If you use the Chrome browser it can mirror your PC screen although there is a slight lag with mouse movements because it is not going directly to the Chromecast. It was well worth the £30 I spent on it. I mainly use it to watch Premier League football with an iPad app using HD.

oldmohawk, my D/l speed is only 3Mbs. would that be a problem? I want to stream films from my pc to tv.
