chores

terryb18

Gone but not forgotten R.I.P.
My mother was very keen on knitting and one of the chores I had to do was to hold my hands out while she draped some wool over them so she could roll the wool into a ball, I hated that. It probably only took a couple of minutes, but it seemed like an eternity. Another chore she had me do was to shell peas, I did'nt mind that so much has I used to eat some of the peas.

Why do we cook peas? They taste so much nicer raw, straight from the pod.

One of my chores was cleaning my grown up brother's shoes. He'd say "Polish 'em up and I might give you 3d." He never did; it was usually a tanner.

First thing I plant each year is Peas they don't last long but who cares.

just the same as hanco, i used to have to hold the wool out in hanks as my mother rolled it into balls. she knitted and sewed nearly all our clothes. another job was cutting the little strip off the end of wallpaper. there used to be a plain strip at the edge of the roll. does anyone else remember doing this. mom also used to make the rag rugs. cut up pieces of material and sow it into hessian to make a rug.

I remember the wallpaper, I just use to bang the end on the pasting table.not very professional, but hey, it was quicker.

There was a little tool for trimming wallpaper, my dad's pal papered and painted for his living and dad always borrowed his. When I got a bit older I was allowed to 'have a go' I wonder why they had to put the border on. I know it had the name or number of the paper, and later you got that from the sample in the book you chose from. After we married when we used wallpaper I was the paper wallah, Brian wasn't very good at it - or so he claimed.

I would imagine that the white strip which was the border was the piece that went under the roller to move it along when it was printed, but i don't really know just a thought...Cat

Just a couple of weeks ago I was with my mother and pulling out something she'd started knitting but never finished. I was rolling the wool into a ball and we were talking about how all of us kids used to hold the hanks of wool while she rolled them into balls! When there was no one around, she's put it over the back of a kitchen chair and do it. When we realized that was possible, we'd all run out the house when we saw the wool being brought out!

Another chore I had was to polish the brass candlesticks.

Hanko I too used to help with the wool winding. My husbands tasks were black leading the hearth lighting the fire and collecting the coal in his old pram. Loved shelling peas too and eating most of them. Bye. Jean.

Another of my chores was to stand in the cellar to make sure the correct number of sacks were delivered and tipped through the cellar head. I'd come back up like I'd done an eight hour shift at t'pit.

Mine, was to light the fire when i came home from School which i hated and cried more often than not because i could not light it, Then i had a brain wave (ting ) if i put the vacuum on to blow instead of suck and... Hey Presto... i never looked back, and my brain has been working like that ever since...Cat

I used to pick the peas as Dad grew them but I was always in trouble for eating them. I also cleaned the shoes and darned the socks I still have my mothers darning mushroom.
