Children of William Foden

She is still in Perry Barr. George is not present.

There are possibly a couple of newspaper articles about her in 1908, Lichfield Mercury & Staffordshire Advertiser.

Then I don't know if this is just a weird coincidence or something more but there is a marriage for an Emma E Barnes and a Henry Spencer registered Lichfield 1917. And there appears to be a corresponding article in the Lichfield Mercury. The search result is a bit garbled but it mentions Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

OMG.Her first husband was Harry Spencer who left for South Africa in 1881.She divorces him in 1886.!This cant be the same guy can it?

Yeah, I know. If it is, then she was living at The Hollies, Shenstone when she married and also when she died (the age is about right) in 1922. There are a couple of articles about that also.

George Barnes was a few years older than Emma. He is in Shenstone in 1911, a retired farmer.

With him is a step son listed as Barnes but he is John Edward William Foden, son of John Foden & Emma, b1901.

There are no actual files just search results from findmypast for the newspapers and census results from familysearch. I don't have subscription to display the actual documents. I can list what to search for.
I would appreciate that, thanks. My S A contact says Harry dies Somerset East, SA in 1950.

The newspaper aticles have been posted by pedrocut, except the ones about her death - two in the Lichfield Mercury, 17th & 22nd March 1922 and one n the Staffordshire Advertiser - just search for Emma Elizabeth Spencer for name and The Hollies.

George Barnes was born in Suffolk, so searching for that with residence staffordshire will get him.

Searching for Emma Elizabeth Barnes, residence Staffordshire in 1911 should return her.

Just found Emma in the 1911 at The Parson and Clerk, Streetly, George is at Shenstone.

It's starting to get to the point that we should discuss pubs to the north of Birmingham where the Fodens DIDN'T have an interest at one time or another!!

Here's a map from 1902 of The Hollies and Bull's Head Shenstone...

Shenstone.jpg

The Bull's Head is still there, not sure if any of the modern buildings correspond to The Hollies.

To recap Emma Elizabeth Williams.

Birth was registered Mar 1859, Aston, the daughter of Wlliam Williams & Sarah Morris.

She marries Harry Spencer 31 Oct 1878.

Has 2 daughters - Pollie & Gertrude - before Harry abandons her.

Divorces Harry Spencer

She marries John Foden 1889.

Has a son - John Edward William in 1901.

John Foden dies in 1904.

She marries George Barnes 1905.

George dies in 1916.

She the re-marries Harry Spencer in 1917 - not sure how long he stays around for this time.

And finally Emma dies 13 Mar 1922.

When John Foden died, he left Emma £3744 so she had a tidy sum to keep her going. I wonder if Harry Spencer heard about that ....

There's a probate record on familysearch, it gives the name of the beneficiary as Harry Foden. Second beneficiary Charles Lawrence. No other details.
So we don't know what effects she left.
- Harry Foden (1878-1938) was probably the son of Charles Foden.
- Charles Lawrence was probably the husband of Margaret Foden (1878-1966), daughter of George Foden & Sarah Goodwin. Margaret was a school governess and just happened to marry Charles who was a schoolmaster (and he left effects of £3299 !)
