Childhood punishments

There are of course many varied and wide ranging opinions on this topic and it is not for any of us to say what is right or wrong. As I have already posted I have been ever thankful to my parents and teachers for smacking me if I went too far out of line. What we have today is the opposite, 'no punishment.' You may have read that I posted my son is a locksmith and security advisor. In this capacity he attends exhibitions for the trade. I was apalled when at one of these shows he purchased a 'stab proof vest as worn by some schoolteachers'. When children know they will not be punished most will play up. Playing up develops into other anti social acts and in countless cases results in detention in one of todays rest/liesure establishments. My sympathy lies with decent children and their parents because in future years, the effort and cost of bringing children up properly, along with the efforts and ambitions of the children who are educated and well behaved will all be wasted because there will be so many dysfunctional ones that will have to be provided for.

Right Stitcher, the problem is a sensible smack by a teacher could not only end the matter immediately, but acted as a deterrent to future problems.
Now that group who have nothing to fear, and everything to gain from lack of discipline just have a field day.Expulsions/suspensions seem to be not a last resort, but a first resort,or in fact the only resort.
I still feel happier banning canning etc in schools,if for no other reason than the legal penalties teachers would face, but we've not sat down, and worked out a decent deterrent.Hence the lost generation of kids, that grows bigger every day has now become the lost generation of useless parents, who unfortunately some of have to live with...literally.

a look from my dad was enough to put fear into us though he never actually hit us.mom did the punishment when necessary ...she had an old dolly stick like a broomhandle she used to get the washing out the tub with .i felt it more than once...it certainly taught us a lesson....but she only threatened it if we were really naighty eight children were a lot to keep on top of...bless her shes 88 yrs old and is still formidable.

Hello Sandra, without people like your parents I wonder what we would have turned out like.

we are a different breed ..we respected our parents and teachers because we were brought up with respect...a slap round the ear off the copper on the beat..was acceptable by parents. today they would be prosecuted..teachers were allowed to punish .i usually got 500 lines ..there is no family unit any more ..when we got home from school mom was always there .dad was the bread winner.not so today. girls have babies very young usually one parent .and the child is spoilt for peace and quiet too many times ..we were lucky to have both parents and given love...our parents were great but strict it we grew up better people for the discipline dont you think.

Sandra, I agree entirely with that. People can say what they like about bomb sites for play areas, broken bisuits and penny K.li. We were happier than most of the kids today. As I said previously the burden of all this is going to fall on the shoulders of those who are or have been bought up properly.

Wessex, the prisons are more overcrowded than ever before even with thousands let out early in an attempt to ease the problem. I am sure we all agree that the lack of a deterrant is the reason for this, and I am sure we all agree that it starts at a pre-school age. I wonder how bad it will be allowed to get before something is done about it?

It definetely starts early. Also this problem has grown bigger over time.
There always were idiots who could not be told, just now there are so many more of them.

as you say stitcher.....we had bomb sites to play and and pennies for sweets if we were lucky,..i used to do errands for people for pennies and give it to my mom.i had my first parttime job at aged 14... i left school at 15 and went straight into employment.and only stopped work to have my children and now as a grandmother i tell my little ones about my life and the hardship we endured ...my friend asked me why i bought so much bedding ...i told her because we didnt have any when we were kids..old horse blankets and army coats to keep us warm...we went to bomb sites picking up anything that would burn ,cant see kids today doing it ..and we did it willingly..as i said we did as we were told and had respect..a family unit. boys need to go into the army for 2 yrs straight out of school ..theyd learn discipline there ..make a man out of them and the thugs of today should be taken to afghanistan where my son serves and see what they have to endure .they are the brave men and women ..they dont go round beating upold women for the price of the next fix....let them see what reak men do !!!!!!!!!!!!1.either that or a good thrashing ...first time they offend .too little discipline when young ....

Sandra, I could not disagree with a word of that. You must remember the Hopscotch, skipping ropes and 99-100 coming ready or not.
We laughed because we were happy and had fun.
Dont start me off now or you'll get me going.
Haa Haa

Yet with all the choices modern science has bought people are less happy.
A good example of this is TV,it was better back in the 50s-70s.More money concentrated in only 2 channels.
Nowadays the same money has to go round hundreds of channels, and don't forget dvds and the internet as other distractions.
Yes the simple pleasures of youth were enough, more than enough, and happiness was a slice of toast with lard,oh how it's changed.

hi stitcher.i sure do remember the hopscotch.we used to chalk on the pavement then get told off for making a mess.parents washed their bit of the pavement daily......hide and seek ..i must confess i used to cheat and look where my friends went.skipping ropes, we used to nick the washing lines and have them stretched across the road from pavement to pavement...singing ."all in together girls ,never mind the weather girls "..cant remember any more lol. we used to get smacked for dirtying the washing line but it was worth the fun we had .about 8 of us took it in turn to nick the washing line from their yard. then we all got smacked in turn....did you play " BASHES " you were dared to do something by friends and i got more good hidings for that than anything.but as you said it did us no harm .....we grew up better people and respected others ...my children had the odd slap but they too are good citizens ..im sure they did their fair share of naughty stuff but i didnt catch them at it ..or they would have been chastised .....good to hear about old times !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi wessex...i remember the toast with lard ..or dripping if you were lucky enough to have had meat for dinner. we used an old toasting fork up to the fire to cook ours as they wasnt always pennies for the gas meter .happy days though ..nowadays its all done in the microwave.everything is made too easy now and kids think its their right to have all the dvd players .p.c.,s wii ,s etc.my grandchildren included .but they do save their money to buy things themselves .they were disciplined as we were .

Hi Sandra,
You can almost smell the bread toasting as you snuggled up close to the fire.Oh wonderful days of youth and innocence, and I'm sure you'd love to be back there, just one more time, with those wonderful family members long ago passed on...I know i would.

how very true i certainly wish i could turn the clock back in time to see my dad sister and two brothers .aunts uncles etc. all made up a family unit which is so rare these days....fortunately i have still got my mom shes 88.yrs old....how we love to reminice....we didnt have much but we were much happier .keep it going !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it went something like. " When I count twenty the rope must be empty, Five, Ten, Fifteen, Twenty"

Nick

thanks nick .your memory is better than mine .i was trying to remember it so i could tell my granddaughter when she skips..good times eh ???

Hi what about doublers in skipping ' corky the cat, sat on the mat, korky the C.A.T. sat on the M.A.T.' I loved my playtimes.

My mum's 86,dad 85.Both are struggling physically, and dad has a type of dementia.
Trying very hard to make the most of whatever final moments god has granted us.

I was reading a Health & Safety story yesterday and I was surprised to learn that they have not stopped any of the playground activities from our childhhod. It has all been stopped by the Education Dept thinktank. All the activitieas were banned because if a child gets hit in the eye with a conker or a skipping rope, or suffers some other minor injury, the parents will claim compensation.
Wessex and Sandra, I liked Pork Dripping best while I was eating it, or Beef dripping was my favourite when I was eating that.

If we were to try to turn back the clock, and add a dollop of commonsense it really would be a hard task. All these laws, and no doubt human rights legislation would make it even harder.

As for the dripping,Goose and Duck are absolutely wonderful to roast spuds in.Not tried them on toast though.

Yes Sandra it really did hurt especially as you only had ankle socks on, and yes we did the cats cradle - such happy times.

Mom only lamped us (My brother and I....2 years between us) if we were fighting and uncontrollable. She wouls send us to bed and stand by the door so we had to pass her, then she would hit is with the saucepan or a high heel whatever she had to hand. We were always able to cover our heads and run.
dad would lose it for bad school reports or bad reports at parents night. I deserved every thing I got. Unlike the demented bullies of teachers at Handsworth Grammar school. A psychotic vicar for a headmaster, gym teachers using pumps or rope.
OK it didnt do me any harm but it didnt do me any good either. After being slippered for smoking I needed a fag to calm my nerves.

hi leonard job.well you really was "PUNISHED ".i went to an all girls school and the punishment was go to headmistress room jesus was i scared of her..tongue on her like a whip ..i remember her smacking a girl up the face for swearing .wouldnt get away with it these days....not enough discipline. ..i didnt beleive in beating my kids but came close to it a few times !!!!!!!!!!!.i was lucky i suppose i can only remember my dad hitting me twice but he was ill in bed and i kept whistling and it got on his nerves..my mom usually dished out the punishment she had an old boiler stick she used to whack us with ..i was very good at dodging that . but we did respect our parents ....not much respect these days is there ....

Fortunately I do not remember being hit by my parents, threatened with ''you wait till your father gets home', and then threatened with the belt but only threatened.
