Charles Reeves

Hi,

I knew from census info that the Reeves family were connected to a shop...though mistakenly i thought it was just Mrs Sarah Reeves.

Anyway, while searching on Ancestry i found a reference to Charles Reeves (Sarahs hubby)at 20, Whitehead street,Aston (my chap,right address) in the 1879 PO directory under Dairymen and Cowkeepers(who knew)
In 1905 and 1915 a Mary Clarke is a shopkeeper at the same address. Am fairly sure this is Charles' daughter Mary who married Joseph Castle Clarke.
Would love to fill in some of the gaps between and find out when Mary took over the shop...or even when Charles became a Dairy man...

Any help gratefully received..

Havetrawled through pages on A**y - No entry in 92 but found him in 1897...

No 20 Whitehead street isn’t listed in the 1878 PO directory, or in any of the earlier directories I have. In 1878 the only Charles Reeves are a blacksmith & a sword maker.
1880 and 1883 Kellys, Charles is at no 20 listed as “dairy”
1884 – 1900 Charles Adams Reeves, shopkeeper
1904 – 1921 Mrs Mary Clark shopkeeper
1932 Howard Jones, shopkeeper

Am a little confused by his trade of Dairy though cos on all the census info he is involved in the gun trade
guess i'll never know how he fell into that one!!

There are several Charles Reeves in the directories. I was only listing the one listed at 20 whitehead st. In 1833 for example there are also another four "Charles Reeves" including:
Reeves Chas.Sword,matchett & cane knife ma 13 St mary's row.
and in 1880 there are the "dairy", the cane knife ma and a cart owner 7 blacksmith in Kings heath.
I don't personally see a swordmaker also being into the dairy business, so I would think they are separate people.
Will gladly search directories more if it would help.

Hi Mike,

Accoding to the census, Charles (Adams) Reeves was a Gun Smith(71),Gun maker(81),gun smith(91) and gun action filer(01).

His wife Sarah was a Tripe seller(81), shopkeeper(91) and shopkeeper - general provisions in house (01).

I am guessing that his wife actually ran the business day to day.

I now know that he was at 20 whitehead from 1879 (po directory) to 1907( death cert) and that his daughter was still there in 1925 electoral roll but didn't know for sure about the "Dairy"..in fact it was quite by accident that i found the reference in the first place.
