Charles Lee

Hi - I would be grateful to know what the directories have on a Charles Lee at 178 Cromwell Street, or Milton Crescent, Church Road, any time between 1902 and 1919 would be relevant. I believe he was a shopkeeper. Many thanks

Nothing for Charles Lee at those addresses in 1903,1904.1905, 1908, 1912.1913 or 1915

Many thanks both. I had a feeling that 'huckster' wasn't going to be anything polite! I think the shop was like a 'corner' shop - selling a bit of everying.
Strange that nothing came up in the directories - in 1912 on the electoral roll Charles is named as owning/renting both premises, and at his death at Cromwell Street in 1919 he was definitely a 'huckster shopkeeper'.
THanks again

i should have added that another person is listed as operating a shop at the Cromwell st premises in the directories, but the other address is not listed.

I used to live more or less opposite 178 Cromwell Street, the name Rotes springs to mind for a shop about here, the shop was about halfway along on the left coming from Oliver Street.

hi - thanks again everyone. It is odd - I know he had the shop there in 1919, as it is on his death cert. I know he was listed at Cromwell Street and Milton Terrace on the electoral roll in 1912, and I can't see why he would have both buildings unless one was a shop.

It's lovely to hear that the shop on Cromwell Street continued - looking on Google maps it looks like it has all changed now. Wonder if anyone has a photo, or knows when it was cleared?

Hi Kate,
As far as I know there are no photographs of Cromwell Street only each end, I have a photo of the Cromwell Arms with our house next door.
The street was being demolished in the early fifties our house was one of the last to go on our side of the street (opposite where your relatives shop was) and that was 1952.
The only original part of the street left is the school.
Regards John.
