Chaplin 1882 onwards

I am trying to solve a mystery.
My GGrandma was born Jane Elizabeth Chaplin in 1884 to Walter John Chaplin born 1857 in Northleach Gloucetershire and Jane Elizabeth Smith b1851 Clerkenwell London(nee Green,first husband died 1880ish)
Jane Elizabeth (1851) had 2 children with Mr Smith they are on 1881 census but gone by 1891????
Wlater and Jane Elizabeth had 5 children Walter Richard 1883,Jane Elizabeth 1884,Artur William 1886,Albert 1887 and Minnie Rebecca 1888.
Jane Elizabeth (1851) died in 1893.
Walter remarried in 1896 and had another child Beatrice in 1899.
The mystery is Minnie was taken away by we think an Aunt ( her Mums sister) after he Mothers death and was brought up with out knowing about her family.
Any info would be great as I am in touch with Minnies daughter who still lives in Birmingham and grand-daughter.
Minnie did remember having a brother but never saw the family again,they did not change her name.
It would be great to fill in the gaps and maybe find more family

I cannot find a birth for 1851 in Clerkenwell (Jane E Green), there is one in Islington and one in Kensington, same reg district as Clerkenwell

Do you have her marriage cert as it will have her fathers name on there, i did put the 1851 Census on here but removed it as the more i looked the more unsure i became.
If you don't have one i would suggest you order this one --

I also looked on the 1891 Census and this gives her birth year as abt1853 and cannot read her place of birth on the image.
If we have her fathers name we can look with more certainty for her on the earlier census and hopefully her brothers and sisters and trace, we hope, who Minnie was living with.

When you say Minnie kept her name are you saying she kept her surname, Chaplin, i ask because i did find a Minnie Chaplin, 12yrs old, scholar in a hospital/school, perhaps her daughter might have heard her speak of it as a child and that is why she never had contact with her family, just a thought.

Can I ask you which source your 1891 census came from. It must be a much better scan than the ancestry one as, even after fiddling round with a photo program I could still only get a faint image for the birthplaces which wasn't really intelligible.

There are a lot of Green families in Clerkenwell and we really need to know the name of her father, we can then try and find his marriage to find her mother also, with these names we are more likely to follow the correct family.

This is the info I do have thanks to the hard work of Minnies grandaughters husband.

Jane Elizabeth Green b 1851 ? Clerkenwell
He parents are Mary Richardson Wright and Richard Edmund Green
they married on 30/11/1845 at St Giles Criplegate London
(have a copy of marriage certificate)
The family lived in Islington and then moved to Birmingham between 1861/1871
Richard Green was a gold cutter
Jnae had 3 sibling Susan b1864,James b 1859,Frederick b 1849
Jane Elizabeth married ??Smith in about 1872 who we think died 1879/1880
Jane had 2 children with Mr Smith Mary b1879 birmingham and Frederick b 1872 birmingham
1881 Jane living with her parents and 2 children
12th May 1882 Jane Elizabeth married Walter Chaplin they had 5 children togeather Walter R b1883,Jane Elizabeth b 1884(my g grandma) Arthur W b1886,Albert b 1887 and Minnie b 1888
Jane Elizabeth died aged 48 in 1893.
Walter then married Eliza Richards and had a daughter Beatrice b1899
Eliza had a son Frank b 1893,he was born in the workhouse,Father unknown.
Minnies family have tried to find out what happened but it seems nobody knows.I would love to find out who bought her up and where she lived as I have recieved a letter from her daughter who knew nothing about her mothers family and the amount of relations she had and never met

Sorry just re read your post
She was know by her family as Minnie Chaplin so never changed either name.
The only thing the family remember her telling them is about having had a brother but she may have only been 5 when taken away.

The Richard on that 1851 Census i posted is a Gold Cutter, the address was 31 Gloucester Street, Parish of St James Clerkenwell.

Not sure if you're still reading this thread, but I've only just joined the Forum to help with my own research and I spotted your reference to Eliza Richards, who is my Great Grandmother and Frank Richards my Grandfather. You're right about his birth in the Union Street Workhouse, and there has been much speculation about who his father might actually be. You might have an inkling of one train of thought. Would love to hear from you or others who have contributed to this thread.
