Certificate Query

Jackie Hill

Gone but not forgotten. R.I.P.
Thanks to Shera I sorted out the Hicken Family census record and it lead me back to Gloucester, there in 1861 I found a Frederick and Eliza with thier Children

Samuel born 1858
Frederick born 1859 he died
Eliza born 1860

They went on to have

Charles born 1862
Edward born 1864
Frederick born 1866

In the 1861 census the are living in Hare Lane

Marriage of Frederick Hicken to Eliza Merchant 1856

I sent for Charles birth certificate about 12 months ago it came back with no fathers name, he was born in Hare Lane

After Shera's help I decided to send for Fredericks birth certificate the one born in 1866, it came back the same no fathers name, he was born in Hare Lane, can anybody tell me if they have had the same problem, or give me a reason why she wouldn't have put a fathers name, everything seems to match so why was there no be a fathers name

Thank you Bordesley Exile and Rowen for your info

The main query was why would you not add the fathers name to a certificate if you are Married,I have never come across this before

Are you sure they were married? Have you seen the certificate or the entry in the parish records?

I have a birth certificate that has the name of the father of the child's mother on it rather than the child's fathers name. We presume because the mother was asked "Father's name?" instead perhaps "child's fathers name?" and being in awe of the authority figure asking the questions got the answer wrong and gave her own father's name by mistake.

Maybe if the children were baptised you would get more info from the parish records that might give a clue?

Lastly, just because you were married does not mean that your children were fathered by him. Maybe Mr Hicken wasn't in the family home when the children were born?

All the above just a thought

Hi Helen

We have just sent for a Marriage certificate, which may throw some light on things

I like you have had Birth Certificates with the wrong names on them I have had the maiden name of the Mother differ, and the Fathers name wrong on Marriage Certificates, but I have never seen a certificate with no fathers name when there was a Marriage

We may send for a disc of parish record for the area and see if she had them baptised

Thanks Helen your comments have give me food for thought

Just another thought, maybe Mr Hichen died between the 1861 census and the birth of Charles in 1862?

Hi Helen

We think we have found Fredericks death in 1880

I'm going to ring Gloucester Family History Centre this morning to see what they hold, and if there are any parish registers I maybe able to buy which may help

Will keep you posted

Jackie

Just looked on the Forest of Dean site They have no Hickin records after 1792 in their parish records.
1792 HICKEN William Francis Baptism Coleford
1783 HICKEN Harrett (sic) Bennett Baptism Coleford
1784 HICKEN Henry Baptism Coleford
1782 HICKEN Thomas Marriage Newland

Intriguing...according to free BMD

Samual Frederick Hicken born Gloucestershire 1857
Eliza died 1861 Gloucs
Charles born 1862 Gloucs
Frederick born 1863 Gloucs
Frederick died 1863 Gloucs
Edward born 1864 Gloucs
Frederick born 1866 Gloucs

of course not all the above might be yours but I searched from March 1856 to Dec 1890. Also I didn't find any marriages.

Helen

Hi Helen

You have got the right family there

Frederick Hicken came from Nottingham and Married an Eliza Merchant in Nottingham in 1856, I'm waiting for the Marriage Certificate to come back

In the 1861 census there was

Frederick Hicken Born 1834 Nottingham
Eliza Hicken Born 1835 St Mary De Lode Gloucestershir
Samuel Hicken Born 1858 St Mary De Lode Gloucestershire
Frederick Hicken Born 1859 Northamptonshire
Eliza Hicken Born 1860 Northamptonshire

Charles Hicken Born 1862
Edward Hicken Born 1864
Frederick Hicken Born 1866 the first Frederick as you said died

We have sent for Birth Certificate of Charles 1862 and Frederick 1866 and both where born in Hare Lane, thats where the family are down as living in 1861, but there was no father on either certificate
