Central Hall Wesleyan Methodist memorial

This memorial was sold on eBay and it's assumed it was from the Central Hall Corporation Street. I have copied the research carried out by a member of the mymethodisthistory.co.uk as it may be of interest to anyone researching named soldiers listed on the memorial

One of the problems to be faced when closing a chapel is how to preserve any memorials.

In January 2016 a bronze war memorial was offered for sale on Ebay. Working from a sample of the names shown in the photographs we concluded that it was probably the memorial from Birmingham Central Hall, which passed out of Methodist use some time ago. All the men appear to be from Birmingham.

Ann Fox has researched the names.

None of these men appear to have been remembered on any other memorial in this country, so we can but hope that the Birmingham Central Hall memorial will re-appear. Any further information about the memorial or the men commemorated will be welcomed.

very sad its been sold on ebay it should be in its rightful place

I'm not necessarily criticising the e Bay seller, more that it's a shame that the Methodist Church didn't find a good home for any memorials before the Central Hall was sold to developers.

yes i agree sparks...i guess its good that someone has it in safe keeping but as the building is still there one would think that the memorial could have remained there...sad but we have seen this happen many times

It is good that it survives, but I would have hoped that a religious organisation would have ensured that it went to a suitable home. As it is it looks like either the church offered it to someone for cash, or it was "rescued" by someone for personal gain

I remember some time ago after someone found a similar memorial from the local presbyterian church asking around about what was supposed to happen to such things. If the church still exists - in this case The Wesleyan Church not specifically the one on corporation street - it should still belong to them and they are responsible for its upkeep. Something to do with the rules on War Memorials. I know the one at Carrs Lane reports to a large repository of such memorials for their denomination but I don't know about the Wesleyans. It was a few years back an I have remembered some of this wrong.
