Cemetery Plans/diagram

cresser

master brummie
Hi all,
I know this is not strictly to do with Birmingham, but I have tried on a couple of the local forums and had no response. I am after a map or diagram, of Redditch Cemetery, Bordesley Road. I have been to the cemetery and asked for one, but they did`nt have any, and there are a couple of graves I would like to find. I was given a plot number, but quite frankly, it was useless, so, if anyone has a copy, or knows where I can get hold of one, I would be very grateful. I have plans/maps of several other cemeteries, I find it a little odd that Redditch don`t have any.
Cheers all, cresser.

Hi Cresser, if Redditch Cemetery haven't got any then shouldn't the staff order new copies if out of stock ? Ring them, shake them up a bit OR get to Redditch Council House and/or Library,,,surely either of these should be able to help you,, Good luck, John

Hi John,
Yes you are correct, but to be hoinest, the day I went, (28th), it was freezing up on the hill, and I couldn`t be bothered to go back in, and I didn`t know where a library in Redditch was although I aim to go to one after the hols. Thanks for replying John, cheers. cresser.

Cresser, Redditch may not actualy have plans apart from for their own use. It may sound surprising, but in Tamworth there are no plans available, as I have tried. I need to locate graves for someone living in Gloucester, but it's not an easy job without a plan. Try looking on the headstones for numbers - that might help. Also the cemetery should be able to give you an idea where the plots are.

Hi Shortie,
Yep, you might be right there, although if there are plans of any kind, it wouldn`t take much effort to photocopy them, which is what Witton, Brandwood End, and Lodge Hill, all do. I was actually given this; Y10/1, which was section 1, and the plot number as Y10, but I saw no graves at all with such a marking on, even new ones. So, the search goes on until I win. Thanks for getting in touch Shortie, cheers. cresser.

I know Cresser, but Birmingham have got A4 copies for public consumption, Tamworth do not have them - I have personally taken the Key Hill and Warstone Lane originals to have them scanned - and they are huge, much too large for an ordinary scanner, so perhaps that is what Redditch has, because that is what I believe Tamworth has. Birmingham's have all been fairly recently done (1980's) by cad, so they are easy to use, but that is not the case with Tamworth.

Hi Cresser, if I go to Redditch tomorrow I will pop into the library and ask if they have a plan there. Just to be certain -you do mean the cemetery where the Crematorium is don't you?

Hi Cresser
A few ideas if you keep drawing a blank:
1.Try the Engineering Department of the local authority they may have plans. Normally there is a telephone enquiry point. My son worked for an authority in the South West and they had a rota for surveying and marking graves out. Although some authorities have contracted the work out.
2.There should be an office on site plan for inspection - Deeds of graves exist so plans are a must.
3. If you are at the cemetery in the working week ask the gravediggers if they have an office/workshed.
4. Ask the local family history group.

Hi Cresser, About what years are you looking for? I have a number of friends & relatives buried at Redditch so may be able to point you in the right area. Anne

Hi DJRVST,
I have printed off everyones help and advice because they all have their merits, and to keep as reference. If blanks do keep being drawn, I will indeed take up your advice. Thankyou, I appreciate your help. cresser.

Hi Pollypops,
Yes, I did see the crematorium whilst there, and I think the road, or entrance is on Bordesley Road. Thankyou, I am very gratefull, but please do not go out of your way. cheers, cresser.

Hi Anne,
Thankyou, I would appreciate any help. The years I`m looking at are; 1) 1938 Q1. and, 2) 1941, 8 March. Thankyou again,cresser.

Hi Cresser, I think you might be looking at the wrong cemetery as Plymouth Road Cemetery in Southcrest was still open at that time. It is now closed for new internments. I can't find the exact date it closed but found reference to someone buying a plot in 1944. Regards, Anne

Hi Anne,
Yes, that may be the case. The only information I`d got was that the burials were at `Redditch Cemetery`, and this was the one that came up after `Googling` it, also, the girl there gave me ; Y10 / 1, so I assumed it was this cemetery. The search goes on ....................! Cheers Anne, cresser.

Hi Cresser, I'm not far from Redditch. Send me the names of your rellies and when the weather is a bit warmer I'll pop down and see what I can find. Anne. BTW what does Cresser stand for?

Hello again Anne,
Well thats very very good of you, and thankyou. The names I am looking for are; Hannah Cresswell, died Q1, 1938. Thats all I have on Hannah. Her spouse, Oliver Cresswell, died 8 March 1941. Cresser, is one of the more `polite`, monickers my mates have given me, short for my surname. They also call my brothers that too, so, at times when we are all together, one of the likely lads will shout out, "Cresser", and three of us will turn round knowing that two of us are wasting our time !!!! Thats mates for you.
Please, please, I don`t expect you - or anyone - to go out of your way for this, I`m quite prepared to do the leg work as long as I have an idea what I`m doing - which is not often if I`m honest!. Thanks again for replying, all are appreciated, cheers. cresser.:friendly_wink:
