Celebrities in passing

A number over the years, but by far the loveliest was a good while ago now in Newcastle Upon Tyne - sometime in the eighties I would guess.

I was up there for a business meeting, stopping overnight and returning the following day. The hotel was central and very close to a theatre - in my memory just a little further along on the opposite side of the same street, though Google Maps/Earth shows me an area today that is nothing at all like the images that my memory of then brings back.

When arriving I had noticed that the theatre boards said Peter O'Toole was appearing in George Bernard Shaw's 'Man And Superman', which I decided on the spot would be an unexpected treat for my evening!

I recall that it was well attended, with a number of singles remaining here and there when I checked so I was still able to find a good seat as a walk-in. And yes it was very enjoyable, good chuckles, plus a couple of minor mishaps with props that were played-off by P. O'T with a glance and an "ooops!" expression to the audience which caused a laugh too. A lovely evening, made more-so by having been entirely serendipitous! :)

The following morning I was waiting for the lift on the way down for breakfast, and when the doors opened Peter O'Toole was standing inside and said 'Breakfast too?' with a smile as I stepped in and said 'Of course!' and we both chuckled ... and he quite charmingly started telling me how he enjoyed a boiled egg with breakfast, that it was good for you as well as tasty, and said I really should think about it ...

We walked through from there to the dining room together and I said briefly that I had been at the evening's performance and enjoyed it greatly, and he seemed genuinely embarrassed by the compliment. An utterly charming manner and a very beautiful man.

We wished each other a good day and he went toward a further table and I turned in a different direction, and I noticed he had sat down with his back to the room :)

Has anyone had a celebrity or well know person walk past them on a Birmingham street, or perhaps seen one “off duty” in an unexpected setting in the city? I know some may find it difficult to suppress a feeling of overwhelming jealousy when I say this, but Bob Price and Cyril Fletcher once walked past me in Kings Heath park after filming an episode of “Gardening Today” there. I’m pretty certain I saw Kevin Rowland of Dexy’s Midnight Runners fame strolling down Middleton Hall Road near Cotteridge, and Pat Roach walked past me in town but they hardly count because they were locals anyway!

I saw quite a few celebrities when I shopped in 1960s/1970s Brum. Derek Dougan walked past me and I knew he was famous but I couldn't place him at first. At different times I saw Sandy from Crossroads and the lady who played the wife of David Hunter. Best of all, I got in a lift in Rackhams with Susan Hanson and Carl Wayne, I was so starstruck I couldn't say a word!

I was walking through New Street shopping centre one morning in the early 80's, and Phil Oakey of the Human League walked past me in full make up, hair on one side and in a full length trenchcoat. They were playing at the Odeon that night.
Not in passing, but I was in W.H.Smiths later in the 80's, and a tannoy announced that Saint and Greavesy were signing copies of their book in the store. As it was December, I thought it would be an ideal Christmas present for my Dad. So I joined the queue, and a student in front of me gave them a copy of Cider with Rosie to sign. Ian St. John was absolutely livid. Greavesy said "Well it is an all time classic, Saint", but the Saint was in a foul mood as he signed the book for me.
I've never seen Roy Wood so I must be a sissy :)
So jealous that you saw Phil Oakey, I loved the Human League. I'm a sissy, but seeing Carl Wayne topped Roy Wood for me!
