Caro family and 137 St Lukes Road

Jacob Winters early stay in Birmingham

Jacob was born on October 20th, 1878 in Kramsk which is now part of Poland.

The information we have on the family is a follows
.Jewish family
.Father ABRAHAM YUDA WINTER
.Mother RACHAEL WINTER
.Sons JACOB WINTER Born in Kramsk 20th October, 1878 (My Grandfather)
.Sons SHIMON WINTER
.Daughter. ROSA WINTER
.Sons MARKS WINTER born 1874 (possible son) (Max/Mendeles)

The sons and daughters all left and stayed in Birmingham for some time.

On 26th October, 1898 Jacob Winter accompanied by his brother Mendeles left Hamburg for London on the steamship Viola. He was 19 and his destination was the St.Katherine’s Dock. His profession was already a Tailor. We don’t know why he left but he was very brave especially as he knew no English.

He headed for Birmingham rather than the more usual places of Leeds and Whitechapel. Obviously he had a lot of sense.

Next we found Jacob Winter residing in Birmingham in April 1901 as part of the UK census. He was a border with the family Weincier also from Poland and also Tailors. They lived at 31 Lower Essex Street, Birmingham. He is already noted as an employer and not an employee in the census.

Marks Winter boarded at 26 Gooch Street which was under a mile away. He stayed with the Caro family who were Jewellers and came from the same region. The 1881 census reveals that the Caro family came from “Clechovia” which is Kleczew, Kalisz Province and only 9 kms from Slesin which is near kramsk in Poland.

Marks -nobody in the family even knew about him .

Re: Requests for information, census, electoral rolls ,Births etc.

I realise this is the wrong thread (perhaps ,if necessary, some kind person could move to whichever is the correct thread (?)), but you state that the Caro's were jewellers. However , on the census form one son islisted as Salesman (Jewellery), but from Kellys, the only Caros in this period listed were: :
1890-99 Caro Myer, boot & shoe maker 246 Gooch St
Gooch St was renumbered between 1899 and 1900 from consecutive to odd nos one side, even the other, so , in fact 246 = 26
1900 Caro Myer, boot & shoe maker 26 Gooch St
1903 Caro Deborah, insurance agent, 26 Gooch street
1904 Caro Robert, insurance agent, 137 St. Luke's road
Nothing for Caro in 1888 or 1905
Deborah was the head of the household in 1901, and so presumably her husband was a boot maker, and she carried on the trade for a while, but then changed.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for that update. I will amend my form. I believe historically the Caro family were known as jewellers but that is different to what this guys actually did.

I was very interested to see that Robert Caro lived at 137 St Lukes road in 1904.

As you know my mystery man Marks Winter (brother of Jacob Winter) lived with the Caro family in 1901.

I have another mystery winter- Myers who lived at 137 St Lukes road around 1909-1911 which is an intriguing winter connection. Myer was the signatory on Jacob Winters 1906 synagogue wedding but we don't know the relatinship between them.

The ages of Myer(50) and Marks(37) in 1910 and the family make up of the Myers make it unlikely they are the same person.

Could you see what happened to Robert caro going forward- where did he live in the next few years and secondly who lived at 137 St Lukes Road after Robert Caro- was it a straight handover to Myer Winter or was there somebody else in between.
Looking forward very much to the results,
Cheers,
gareth

Don't know if the following is any help?
1930 at 119 Wellesley Street
Myer Caro
1935 at 119 Wellesley Street
Myer Caro and Soloman Sidney Caro
1939 at 157 Hamstead Road
Myer Caro and Yvonne Caro
1945-1955 at 34 Gibson Road,Handsworth
Kathleen Y Caro and Myer Caro (with Harold and Rebecca Cowan in 1955)
1950 at 26 Gibson Road,Handsworth
Robert Caro
Marriages Jun 1937
Myer Caro married Kathleen Y Gadsby Birmingham 6d 775

Gareth
Only later mention of Robert is:
1913 Caro Robert, tailor, 236 Balsall Heath Road
By 1915, 235 Balsall Heath Road is occupied as a private residence by William Black
Looking at the electoral roll, the only one that comes up is Robert Caro in 1950 at 26 Gibson road , Handsworth. Surprisingly. Only a few doors away are Kathleen & Myer Caro at 34 Gibson road.

147 St Lukes Road

1905 Henry Attwood
1908 Mrs Sarah Attwood
1910-21 Mrs Attwood

Dear Mike ,
I am a bit confused about Miss Atwood as it seems Meyer Winter was there between 1910-12 at 137 St Lukes Road and so was Miss Atwood.
Cheers,
Gareth]

Meyer Winter not listed 1905
1908 Myer Winter 148 Varna Road
1910-1912 Meyer Winter 137 St Lukes Road
1913 Jacob Bronsky 137 St Lukes Road (Meyer not listed)
No Isaac listed
No sign of Meyer in business section in 1912,13 or 21
Slipper makers around this time that are listed are:
Green Solomon, 157 & 157½ Bromsgrovest
Harris Jacob, 75 (back of) Hurst street.
Masser William, 217 Sherlock street

Sorry Gareth. got a bit mixed up. Thought I was looking for 147 St Lukes Road, not 137. To be fair to myself, that is what I put in the post 5, and you must have read it as 137 also.
For 137 St Lukes road after 1913:
1915 Jacob Brodski
1921 Harry Putsman
The electoral roll shows Harry Putsman staying there till 1939
But I think you meant you wanted after Myer and before Robert, not after Robert. As there is only one year between the two events (1912 for Meyer and 1913 for Robert), I don’t think we will ever know for certain, but 1 year is not much time for another person to occupy it.

Re: Caro family and 137 St Lukes Road-1908

Dear Mike,

Thats great work to find this all out for me. Did you find an entry for 1908 for the 137 St Lukes Road. There is a crucial gap betwen 1904-Caro and 1910-Winter.
I am trying to prove a connection between the Myer Caro family and the Myer Winter family through them exchanging 137 ST LUkes House -so 1908 is the crucial one, I think. If somebody else is living there it would give me pause to think.

I found also interesting that these two families were boot finishers, and slipper makers and their wifes both had the same first names-Deborah.

Hope you can help on this critical 1908 Keelys entry.

Cheers,
gareth
