I have a CARFIELD "baby"bike ,made in Windmill Street Smethwick in 1922,and have been told the Company went bust in 1925,.147cc with a belt drive=1 1/2horsepower,I have ridden it for many years, but, with todays traffic ,not now.I believe the Company was Carter&Fieldhouse, and they did not pay the rates on the premises, the council closed them,I take it that this was in the Great Depression,
I still have an ARIEL LEADER [1958 no 170]and an ARROW,All made by the hands of BIRMINGHAM men and women.
Still with the GREAT CITY ,my 1985 Land Rover 90 still going well at 197000miles thanks to Brummies!! Allen

Thank you John ,Windmill Lane it is,it is a sad story about the previous owner,he was in the RAF at BROADWELL nr Burford in 1944 stored the bike in a barn ,went with the 6th Airborne on "D" Day and never came back,he could be a brave young man from any town ,doing his duty to protect us all from the Germans. In May 1994 I took the bike back to the derelict Control Tower looked to the South,Waiting,it was 50 years too late ,sadly no Dakota returned.
I put the story on web under BBC "Lost but not forgotten"contributions[CARFIELD] as a visible tribute to BIRMINGHAM and an unknown Serviceman. Allen
