Capper Or Jones Stone Mason, Hope St

gingerninja

knowlegable brummie
HI am searching to find if a William Capper/Jones owned a Monumental Stone Mason Yards in Hope Street from the late 1800's to early 1900's, he also had a son George whom possible carried on the trade.

Any information would be very welcome.

Thanks

Cannot find any mason (either “stone & marble” or “monumental” in Hope st in 1890, 1895, 1900 or 1908 .
There is a William Capper in 1890 , millwright at back of 39 Unett St and in 1900 there is a William George Jones, stone mason, at 16 Union St, Smethwick

William Capper changed the family name to his De facto wifes name Jones around 1891, he also traded under his sons name George Jones who was originaly a Capper Before William changed it.
Hope this helps . I have been trying to locate any stonemason businesses bearing the name Capper or Jones, but so far I have had no luck.

Regards cappdn

hi pomgolian.
No you are not off beam you are spot on, this must have been where they lived after arriving in Brum. I think the reason he changed the name to his wifes was to avoid any tittle tattle, his name being Capper and his De facto Jones. He was probably forced out off Cheltenham because of all the gossip about them living together. Pity they could not have lived in this era, nobody realy cares what your marital status is. Thanks for this information it has realy helped.

Regards.

cappdn. " Dennis Capper" Sarahs Great Grand son, now living in Australia.

Dennis I have looked for more records on 'The capper' family...
This seems to be the birth of Williams eldest son on 1881 Census .

Births Dec Quarter (Oct,Nov, Dec) 1861 CAPPER Charles Bristol Vol 6a Page 51
(This from the FreeBMD site)
CHARLES CAPPER Birth: Christening: 09 OCT 1861
Saint Augustine The Less, Bristol, Gloucester, England

Parents: Father: WILLIAM CAPPER Mother: SUSANNAH
(and this from the IGI site)

Marriages Jun Qutr(Apr,may,June) 1861 Capper William Bristol Vol 6a Page 172
(This could be his marriage.... and Susannah's death?)
Deaths Mar Qutr (Jan, Feb,Mar) 1881 CAPPER Susan 41 Bristol Vol 6a Page 32

Most of this can be confirmed by getting Charles' birth cert

HI

William Capper did marry Susan her maiden name was Jones, she was the sister of my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Jones (coastguard), Susan died in at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, I can confirm the date as we have a copy of the death certificate, we believe Sarah and her family, my great grandmother is Annie, they moved to Cheltenham from Kings Lynn to stay with her sister in law after her husband Thomas died, rather than returning the Milford Haven her birth town.
